    Any Potential???

    Any potential for these 3?
The toilet is actually a re-shoot after being told I needed a tighter crop.
The dock has a problem with the negative (upper right on this one and upper left on another )
The phone booth is down by the docks...the dof is a little off...anything else?

I think the under-the-dock picture has the most potential as you have already found a great angle/perspective to add interest to the shot. I also like your exposure and contrast differences between the foreground and the background.

    Hi,
I agree with Tuna that the second shot is the best. I think including a silhouette would make the shot stronger.

    Re: Any Potential???

Well, I guess the question is...potential for what? I personally like the phone booth photo the best. It is the most interesting, I think. And the toilet photo is interesting too as you don't normally see a toilet outside like this. LOL The dock photo is nice, but DOF seems a little off on the top of this photo as well. I don't see the negative problem you are talking about though on my computer.

    What are you trying for?

    Re: Any Potential???

Try a square crop on the bottom of the third shot. It makes the bottle collection more of the subject - just a few of the proverbial 99 bottles.

Try burning in that troublesome part on the dock shot, I think it would help.

The toilet needs to be white and a bit more contrast would help too. If you metered on the toilet you have to remember that your meter is being fooled and is going to try to make it gray. A levels correction will put some pop in the shot.

This sounds like a lot of complaining from me, but I really think these shots are pretty good - guess it's just my day to be picky.

    Re: Any Potential???

I think the dock shot and bottle shot have good potential. Mayve crop into the bottle shot as Chuck said, remove the backtground compleatly, i think the variation in tone in the visible walls of this cubicle will give a nice sence of repitition to the shot.

The dock shot i really like, the darkness of the dock platform really gives the feeling of a tight space for me, maybe beacause it takes up half of the picture.

    Re: Any Potential???

Thanks everyone, all your advice is great.
Tuna - This is my personal favorite too...It has the most contrast out of the bunch and is kinda moody. It is definitely a place that I will revisit.
Yoyo - I agree this image would be stronger with a person silhouette, but I don't know who will do that for me...this is down by the industrial section and these docks are nasty. This was the worst place I have tried to take a photo & I'm kinda trespassing too . I don't think I can convince my girlfriend this is a good idea ;)
Nate - I was checking to see if any of these had the potential for a strong image or were they nothing more than a snap shot.
Chunk - Great ideas! I like the concept of the bottles...this was an area I was attracted to...why are they there, who did it, etc. The toilet - what do you mean my meter would try to make it grey? Does this mean I have to underexpose the shot and then make up for it in the darkroom? Will this happen with all bright white areas? Thanks for being picky - your making my images stronger!

    Cheers

Just the opposite. You need to overexpose from what your meter suggests if you are metering on something white. The camera meter assumes that whatever it see is an average scene (18% grey) so if you meter on white it sets the controls to record it as gray. If you meter on something black it still sets the controls to render that as gray. Snow scenes and bright sandy beaches are shots that normally need some over exposure to capture the natural brightness and contrast.
You are generally best off to get the exposure right on film and not have to correct it that much in the darkroom. If you underexpose the highlights, the shadows are losing more detail than they need to.

    Re: Any Potential???

Tao, I think the toilet shot and then the phone booth have the most potential , for my taste. This toilet shot, after upping the levels a bit to get it more white, would be a great addition to a collection of toilets images. I personally think it would have been stronger if you had included more space above it, show more of the area it is at by use of "negative" space.
The bottles in the phone booth make this scene and tell a story. I like it cropped as it is.

    Re: Any Potential???

Gary - These images are standard resolution and have been fitted to the forum using MS paint (you can start laughing now ;) ). So I hope when I take the negatives to the darkroom I get some nice prints, really get the toilet a nice crisp white.
Here is the three photos I have of the toilet.
Does the 2nd vertical shot need more space? Do any of these work?
    Thanks for help

ps - I'm still on the lookout for other random toilets...no luck yet.

The one on the bottom, the horizontal shot. Thats what I'm talkin about. Good one. I was thinking of you the other day while driving there was a toilet out in the street with some bags of garbage waiting for trash collection. I was thinkin it was a good shot to go with your other previous post. Keep at it, you'll have a great collection of shots before long

    Re: Any Potential???

PT, I honestly liked the original toilet shot better (from a couple weeks ago) but out of the new cropped ones, I prefer the bottom of the three with the wide right space (the horiz. shot)
    Keep at it.

    Re: Any Potential???

The third of the new ones is better, maybe have the toilet at a direct angle, and play with different appatures. This may sounds stupid but the toilet looks relatively un-used at the moment, try and have the idea that the toilet is in an awqward location but still in use. A the moment the picture is shot well enough but it currently just is a picutre of a toilet for me. I like the toilet sequence by Dwane Michaels if you know it. Plays with scale and narrative elements.
