    Another super moon

I had a better composition lined up but the moon was farther South in the sky than I anticipated so I had to quickly recompose. It was also darker than I was expecting by the time it appeared but these challenges are what make photography exciting!

    Both shot with a Pentax K-5 & Pentax A* 300mm f/4 (vintage manual lens)

You really have those rocks well exposed but the moon seems bright to me. Maybe that's the way it was though.

I agree the moon is a little too bright, but everything else looks good.

    Re: Another super moon

I would have exposed for the moon in the first shot, even if it meant underexposing the foreground. It seems like the moon isn't too overexposed, which means you might have still had some shadow detail in the foreground.

Did you bracket, by any chance?

    Re: Another super moon

Thanks for the feedback. I actually did expose for the moon but then the foreground is so dark I end up with the moon too light when I try to salvage the foreground. I found too much fill light in LR3 makes rings around the high contrast area which is the border of the moon and that doesn't look right. I didn;t bracket because I was thinking I would have a tough time aligning a hdr but in hindsight I guess I should have!
Here's another try at PP taking more care with the moon and using Photoshop to just increase the foreground brightness and affecting the moon less.

    Re: Another super moon

Matt - Pretty awesome. I really like the way you got the moon to look so big via comparison to the foreground. I think it would be even better if there was a structure that the viewer could compare the moon against - maybe a church with a steeple, for example. I do like the way the rock detail is discernible; my only complaint there is that it looks a little unreal because it looks too detailed and bright (...not sure if this makes sense). And yes, the moon's a tad bright and loses detail as a result, but you should be able to fix this. Don't think the new post is there yet - try bumping it down another 1/2 stop.

Matt, I'm trying to learn LR4 and was wondering if you could send me a copy of the original file so I can take a whack at it.

I love the first, but would be tempted to darken the exposure of just the sky and moon. Love the comp and the point at which you caught the SM.
