Another average sunset for everyone to rip...

I figured I might as well join the crowd. I took this last summer in the San Joaquin Valley as we were making our way home to so. California. Can't find the original file but it must be on one of my cds somewhere. Go ahead, sock it to me with your critique.

Oh, shot with my Digital Rebel and Sigma 28-80mm

Beautiful shot.....easy on the eyes. I like how everything is controlled with just enough detail to bring interest to the shot (e.g. treeline and bird to the right). Very relaxing image.....

    shrack,
you know how I feel about your images, and I really like this one. I think the smoothness of everything yet the contrasted sharpeness really gives this image its strength. it's beautiful, and the sun peaking over the buildings is a great moment. Wouldn't be nearly as awesome without that bird silhouetted, but there it is! I would personally print this out as a panorama, probably about 2-3 feet long, frame it, and hang it on my wall. Would love to see a bigger version. it really just goes to show you don't need super expensive equipment to get awesome shots.

schrackman,,,,I don't usually comment on sunset/sunrises here but this is one of the nicest I've seen...I love the whispy clouds contrasting with the silhouette of the trees..The bird in flight adds that extra dimension...

Print it,frame it and hang it on your wall as a HUGE mural!!!!

Nice. I like the panoramic style on this. The colors in the sky are deep and rich...

Well, I am amazed at how the personal taste of some here is so far removed from even basic photographic composition and technique.

This is a true snapshot in that it does not meet any of the standards for composition and about the only standard of technique met is that the sky is adequately exposed. The centre of interest is way too small and too far away. A 1000mm lens or a car would have got you closer to an appropriate distance. There is too dark dead space at the bottom and the right and left side as well as dead space in the sky caused by minimal clouds.
Limited pale colour provides no colour impact either. The image is also totally FLAT with no real foreground (too far away), no middle plane, and the sky gives no feeling of depth either because of the lack of cloud cover.

Although technique certainly has it's place in photography, none-the-less it's sad that some are so caught up in standards and proper technique that they miss the beauty of life around them. The sunset in question is gorgeous and the photo does a wonderful job of portraying it's beauty, and it's a shame to get so caught up in standards and what the norm is that that beauty is missed.

Sorry to contradict you, but if you live where I do, that sunset is less than average and certainly not gorgeous, and the technique could give it a little more impact either with a very long lens or a much closer position, creating some depth and making it a true scenic shot. Even with that the sky is quite weak in colour and beauty.

Re: Another average sunset for everyone to rip...

Thanks everyone for your comments! While I don't think this is a knockout sunset, I am happy that many of you find it pleasing.

Ronnoco...I think you are starting to play by your own rules.

This photo actually incorporates many of the most fundamental rules of photography, such as: conformity to the rule of thirds, proper exposure, symmetrical balance, center of interest (regardless of size) supported by subordinate elements, and of course, simplicity. Check again the same site you recommended in the Help Files and see whether or not these rules have been observed in the photo above. Color here can be debated based on personal preference, and I can agree with you that it is not dramatic in this case. But perhaps it doesn't always need to be. Sometimes less can be more. As for the image not having any depth, I don't suppose that explains how you came to the conclusion that the scene itself appears far off in the distance? :wink5: For some, that might convey the idea of how fleeting things really are at the end of the day.

I would name this serenity, as livin4lax09 said "I would personally print this out as a panorama, probably about 2-3 feet long"
    I agree.

I am thinking how the simple basic structure of this really is so relaxing(as others prev. stated) What's not to like?
    Nice work,
    Rick
