I would suggest turning the camera sideways so as to get both the statue and the window fully in.

I agree with Frog. But I also think that moving back and getting the window fully in might have been superior if you could also have exposed the insides of the church also. THat would be more of a challenge alright.

Two exposures, one for the window, one for the interior.
Then use PS CS2 extended dynamic range to make one image.
You'd need to crop them to fit if you did it handheld because they'd probably not line up.

it was just a walk about snap really taken in a huge church in brugge.. here is one of the church interior.. lots of dark alcoves off to the sides thow.. very awe inspiring place that made me feel guilty even getting a camera out.. he he

apart from the fact its always raining brugge has some wonderfull photo opportunities..

That second pic is a very pretty shot. Elegant and powerful design and shows how well they've kept it up. Overall a much better photograph because it presents much more data to the viewer.

Interesting topic, taking photos in a church. I'm not sure it's bad to take pictures in one as long as there are not services going on and one is respectful of others etc. A lot of the churches out west are pretty much understood to be living relics to the wild west past, and they dont seem to mind the attention they get. I've yet to be frowned at, anyways..
