George Zimbel: Digital diahhrea is a disease for which there is a simple cure. Take one frame of a scene. It is exquisite training for your eye and your brain. Try it for a month. Then try it for another month…then try it for another month…..
I think you could lose some of the sky and a bit of foreground water, cropping to something like 16:9 or 3:2 aspect ratio (horizontal). Maybe clone out the distracting specks of boats, two on the right and one on the left of the main subject.
Also, I wish the main boat were facing in the opposite direction, into the frame, not out, but I think it works OK at is – just it would have been better.
Overall, very simple composition and image, good work, especially with the level horizon.
I am not so sure it really works as a mono. It's a very simple composition with rather a lot of empty/negative space in it. Monos, I think, work best when you have an image with interesting shapes and/or textures. Even a more dramatic sky might have helped in this. Colour might have worked better in my view.
I've attached the colour version of the shot. I think I was pushing the shot to begin with. There wasn't a lot there, and I was more curious as to what people thought of it.
Cheers,
Dan
