    Almost Autumn

Although the calendar says it is Fall, the trees here on Long Island aren't as cooperative. But they are changing fast.
Went out to a spot known for its fall colors on SUnday & shot a few (well, ok a few hundred) pics - will be back this weekend when colors should be brighter.
But I was struck by the few colorful flowers still in bloom. Attaching 2 similar shots of the flowers with the almost-fall colors in bkgd. Also saw a little house on the premises that made me ask where Snoopy was. I guess he was out hunting the Red Baron.

    What are your preferences/ suggestions?
    Thanks

    coachgns -

Good try. The top two are really flower shots, not fall colors. I think they have potential, but that they are compromised by strong backlighting. I shot like this will never have much of a chance unless you use a fill flash, but even then, the water is simply too bright - it takes away from the flowers. I'd say to always lean towards a darker background when shooting something like this. Also, they're a little soft too. Make sure you use a tripod and try to wait for when the wind isn't blowing. Wind can knock flowers all over the place :\

I do like the house/hut shot. But somehow the time of the day isnt right. Maybe you can go back and reshoot when the leaves are more colorful, either at sunrise or sunset when the light is hitting the trees.

I agree with GB regarding your first 2 images. Very tough situation to balance as you have a bright sunlit background along with a heavily shaded foreground. Even if you used a fill flash, your flowers would have been too hot as the foreground bank will still be dark due to fall-off.

Try to find subjects to fit the situation. Since it doesn't seem to have been a cloudy day at all, I would have shot completely in the sun or completely in the shade or gone for a sillouette of something.

    Hope that helps.
