Alaska Photos 11 - Knik Glacier Flyover

I'm fairly pleased with these Knik glacier flyover shots I took in July, but since they were taken through window/Plexiglas (not sure which) there were issues with both reflections and sharpness.

Are these sharp enough? Maybe not to the level of great shots. A little sad, because I think we had some great weather for photography that day (the pilot called it the best he's seen).

    C&Cs are welcome

Nice work GB, wall hangers for sure. The third one might make for a nice B&W. I am glad you got a lot of shooting time on your trip.

Yeah, beautiful shots. The first one seems to stand out to me for some reason. I think because the clouds make it so dramatic, though I wonder if the top cloud takes some majesty from the mountains. Or do I like the second one better, still dramatic, but the mountain is still strong.

    Thanks for feedback.

Greg, they do have that classical wallhanger look, but I'm still disappointed with the sharpness. Maybe I should sit on them and wait for a miracle PS plug-in that fixes soft images w/o any of the artifacts the current sharpening algorithms generate (call it the miracle sharpening algo)?

And yep, I just couldn't resist shooting a lot there, even though I wanted to play more of a tourist.

Thanks too Arne. I have to play w/ the top one more. The second from top is more classical, maybe even a little like Half Dome.

The first one stands out for me too, but because it is OOF and a little strange on the colors, it looks like and old P&S film camera shot. The rest have a nice crispness to them. That's a really nice shot of the glacier. Those Talkeetna and Chugach mountains are beautiful and remind me that I tend to take them for granted when I get down there.

I like them all but #4 is my favourite with the snow movement from the top of the mountain easily visible with the trailers falling into the pools of snow. Glad to see you enjoyed your trip =)

    GB,

I think you should be very pleased with the quality of these shots, regardless of being taken from an airplane. Colors are deep, plenty of sharpness..., well done. I wanted to take a glacial air tour during my trip in May, but the weather was not cooperating. Thus, all my shots are from the ground. Looks like you had a great time.

Re: Alaska Photos 11 - Knik Glacier Flyover

    Thks guys.

EOS I see what you mean about the top one seeming from another photography era. It now reminds me of the shots I sneakingly took in basic training with a 110 P&S. You could actually see PWS from here. It was a great little ride. Maybe you should fly over there or better yet have a friend pilot take you so you can shoot it too!

Jaedon, so we have a vote for # 4! It is a favorite with me also, just seems cleaner and sharper, though also has less of a subject. Maybe it's what expert skiers see before setting off. The trip was enjoyable I guess, but I don't really see it that way (or not), maybe it was more of an 'exploratory' adventure for me. Living in the semi-desert you just don't see much green or snow. Just a different way of life there, I guess.

Thanks too, CF. I think the glacier shots here - sharp or not - are the best of my trip. Denali wasn't bad either but I was too far away from the animals, and Seward and Anchorage were pretty much a wash due to some food poisoning from Talkeetna.

I seriously expect a new effect will come out in a year or so that corrects the sharpness. Then we will see!
