    Re: Afganistan...

Actually the people of Afghanistan have a broad look of ethnicities ranging from very light to dark olive skin tones and many have green, blue light colored eyes as well. The area has been a crossroads of cultures and ethnicities for millennia. But that has little to do with a critique of the image.

I like this one, it has a lovely sense of mystery. The colors are deep and rich although the light seems a little too yellow/warm for my tastes, but perhaps not for yours. I like the intensity of the gaze and how the veil/wrap keeps us focused on them but wish there were not such a heavy shadow created by her brow. Those are small concerns though. On the whole this is a beautiful image.

I really ejoyed some of your other photos. That character with the expressive hands in General section is a real hoot. Wish I knew him.

The photo you have here is quite misterious, not only because the the person's skin tone does not match what we usually see in this dress, but I'm not sure whether I'm looking at a male or a female.

So, did you shoot this in Afganistran, of a Afgani? Or did someone just like the scarf and tried it on?

Good photo by the way. Could be a little bigger and perhaps a little bit sharper around the eyes.

Yes, you are correct in that my appraisal of the persons ethnicity has nothing to do with the quality of the picture.

I do like the picture though and the tones. This appears to be a shot of a man. And the area has been a crossroads of the worlds since ancient times. Good photo. I wish I could do as well.

Who remembers the "Afghan Girl" shot by Steve McCurry for National Geographic back in the 80's??One of the most stunning portraits I have ever seen..

Yes the Steve McCurry portrait of an "Afghan Girl" was amazing - such perfect green eyes. I believe he hunted her down again a decade later. It was amazing how haggard she had become in the intervening years. Still, the original portrait was astonishing.

I like this one too! It reminds me of adverts we used to have in the UK for a choc bar called Turkish Delight - their slogan was "A touch of Eastern Promise".

I so thought of that when I saw this photo. you know, they actually went back to afghanistan to find the "afghan girl" and got another shot of her! actually got her to take off the uhm, oh **** i dont know what theyre called.

anyway onto the critique - a GREAT shot, and im very impressed! this shot reminding me of the mccurry shot is a good thing! did a great capture - timing angle and technically speaking you did a great job. i might want to chop off a tiny bit of the lost shadow detail on the right side of the image, other then that i have nothing else.

    Re: Afganistan...

This is a very good photo as it raises a question which I cannot answer as there are no clues. But this person looks more like a man than a woman to me.

    Still its an excellent photo.

    Roger

PS is it just me and Chunk who thinks this is a man? (Just read the other comments)
