    Abandoned chair

One of the first shots out of my new D700.

Look forward to the comments and criticism.

Interesting idea but your image has dof problems. I also think that the upper part of the wicker and the upper right should be burned in some. I also think there are composition problems with this image.
Too bad all the people who know how to run this country are busy running taxicabs or cutting hair.

    Thanks for the comments.

Can you expand on the "dof problems" and "composition problems?"

I agree with jim onthis image,a nikon d700 is a great camera,it should take better shots than this ,your settings must be off, your depth of field is off to the plant growing out of the chair ,i'm assuming thats your target shot, composition lacks in this shot, alittle mundane ,your first d700 shot people expect to be wow'd by the camera's abilities, sharpness and clarity, kind of lacks on this image, thats my opinion.

looks like a nice camera exposure. composition wise...the bright light on the right just drags your eye away from what should be your focal point , the sprig running up thru the chair. Your DOF runs a good foot in front of the sprig and then abrubtly ends after. The sprig is not given a background to really jump out. Maybe lower from the left using the bright background to showcase the sprig and give a little flow with the chair angling. ..or maybe I'm nuts.
Please ask to edit photos and I'll do the same!

Sorry to disappoint. I wasn't posting this to say "Look at this picture with my new D700!" If I was doing that, I would have posted something I liked more. But this forum is supposed to be for critiquing shots; it stands to reason I would post something I'm not sure about. That's how I roll, anyway.

That's a lot more constructive. Thanks. I can see how the upper-right area can be distracting. If I find myself walking down that alley again, I'll try some of your suggestions.

    Re: Abandoned chair

I must say that I was a bit thrown off by some of the earlier comments, but then this is what I like about this forum. . .we all see things from different perspectives and can learn alot from one another. I have.

Personally, I like the shot alot and would only suggest cropping a bit from the left side just to eliminate the slight background coming though.
The DOF I feel is perfect in this and works well to help the sprig and those other on the right side to stand out well. An excellent subject here btw.
The bright background on the right does not bother me at all, but I guess if you were to slightly burn it in or tone it down some it might help.

As I continue to view this, I'm not certain about my suggestion for cropping the left side. It can stay as it is. I think I have an issue with the ultra violet color in the small area at the top left corner and perhaps if that was desaturated or removed somehow I would have no issues with this image at all.
I think this is quite good.

Thanks for the comments. I'll try desaturating the ultraviolet in the corner and burning in the background on the right. If I like the results I'll post the updated version.

I've learned a lot here from both the criticism of my pictures and the criticism of others'. I'm grateful for it and look forward to it every time I post something. I took offense to polarbeardiggers' comments because they weren't constructive, not even in the least. I don't post pics here when I consider them to be home runs; rather, I post them when I'm not sure if they work. If my intent was to show off the D700's abilities that probably would have been in my subject line and I would have posted something far different. Ah well. Life goes on.

I think PBD might have misunderstood and thought this was a "test shot" you were posting in which case it would not be ideal as far as test shots go.
In any case, I find the photo to be quite good. When I crop with my browser window, I find that taking some off the bottom and off the left side gives a good tight simple composition and remains effective as far as the subject goes. Might be worth a try.
However, I do like this as it is.

    Re: Abandoned chair

I see where you were going and I agree with Gary. The subject is tack sharp and also the flowers on the right. The DOF works ok with me. I might have cropped just a small amount of the top and would like to see what it looked like with the far right group of flowers cropped. It might center the chair to much but it would be interesting to compare.
