    4 the WB&N thread

I find better stuff on the way to go find stuff than I do when I get there...

    Your thoughts?

    Re: 4 the WB&N thread

Hey Paula...being honest, I have seen this a couple of times, the reason I haven't said anything is just that the image does not appeal to me...has no feeling lets say.
Probably you´ll be wondering why and old bike pic has a lot of comments and this does not. Well...I have no clue TBH but one catches your eye and the other not. Maybe this picture needs a different point of view, a different angle and approach, something that makes it a unique thing....currently is just a snap shot. HTH

    Paula,

the vertical panels on this building look very interesting to me....perhaps a close up of just a section of that without any reference to the roofline or a perhaps shot looking along the side of the building showing the way the panels are warped.

I like the colors and the panels would be interesting if closer.

Thanks, Stuart! The color and texture was the appeal for me here. I like your idea. I can't get back there but maybe I can carve something out of the original??

    Paula,

There was a bunch of those in the P'cola area after Ivan and Dennis, so that is pretty common place around here, they are almost all cleaned up now, after 5 years, but there remain 2 within 2 miles of my house. Just wanted to explain why it does not do any thing for me, however maybe you can do something with it in Post.

I think the two biggest problems for me is the lack of clouds and the tree on the left. I like the color and texture of the building. Maybe a different angle or explore the inside, if possible.

LOL! The best therapy for me... some PP, I think that your shot has potential...
A quick play with it shows a different thing...maybe I over did it but works to state my point. I don't say this is the "mood" you like or need for this pic but gives you an idea.

BlueRob: Thanks for your efforts. For me, the draw was mainly the colors -- and I liked the fact the building color was mirrored in the tree.

I think the black and white works better. hmm, I think the problem with the image is that it might be a tad too tight while being busy at the same time. I think all those bushes are getting in the way and the tree on the left also cramps it from the left and top.

Thanks, Leels ad armando! I do lean toward tight crops many times it seems.

I don't know what happened to the building. Out of curiosity, I checked the records and there was a cat 4 tornado (207-260 mph winds) back in April of 1991 in that area. Of course, there would be no building at all if that tornado came anywhere really close.

    Re: 4 the WB&N thread

You definitely have an interesting subject. Not sure the B&W works better, as you lose the fantastic rust color (which I'm guessing is what grabbed your attention to begin with). In my opinion, the viewer doesn't have to see the whole building, to know what the whole building looks like, so it's better to utilize the most important elements to convey the story. I'm seeing something like this:

    Re: 4 the WB&N thread

Paula, I think your not in close enough or your not far enough away. You seem to be right at the point where we can not take this in as a landscape with an interesting old structure, and yet not close enogh to focus in on any one interesting aspect of the subject.
i agree with where Jet is going with his highlight of the interesting portion of the subject.
In a situation where getting the entire subject and its surroundings would not be ideal because of perhaps things and distraction all around the scene and/or the sky and lighting do not help or add anything it is an option to get in real close and try to isolate interesting aspects of the subject itself, as Jet highlighted here.
Zooming in tight on various little features of this gem would be the way to go.

Thank you, thank you, dray, jet, gahspidy, BlueRob, and everybody.

Jet, I like what you did. Stuart was on the same track, but I didn't see an effective crop as well as you did.

Gary, I appreciate the "why" that you offered. I never would have thought of that, but I think you make a very good point.

Thanks to you all for your time and efforts.

I find the colors good, mipiace the tree with the branches to the left that give depth to the image. I would have expanded if there were any disturbing elements on the right a little pèèure focused on a particular as rightly suggested by jetrim.

Thanks, frapuchi, for your comment. Unfortunately for me, your English is way better than my Italian. I don't know what "mipiace" and "pèèure" mean in English. I understand you like the colors. Are you saying you like the big tree on the left because it adds depth to the photo? Does your last sentence mean that you would have included more space to the right of the building unless there were some disturbing elements (which there was an ugly utility pole I was avoiding), but if I couldn't do that then jetrim's idea of photographing just a portion of the building was the best aproach to the scene? Sorry for the trouble, but I'm trying to understand. Thanks!

    Hello,
There is really no trouble and you do not need to apologize. It 'very positive exchange of strange thoughts, too and do it willingly.
Sorry but I made a mistake. You better believe it, I wanted to say I like the tree on the left that depth to the image.
I also like the colors and not look good in B & W (though I very much appreciate the B & W, I come from analogue and I printed many years in my darkroom)
If there were disturbing elements have been kind enough not to widen the right.
For suggesting jetrim would mean the subject of your photos lend themselves to being photographed in some detail. Would be another photo but there were many interesting things.
A big greeting from (now) cold Italy submerged by snow.

I'll put the translation into Italian:

    Ciao,
