    244----Your opinions?

Taken a couple of days ago. This seems to look just a liiiiittle tilted, as I straightened the photo so that the horizontal lines of the window frame and sidewalk were level, but the brickwork appears to be canting slightly to the right. I'm not sure if it's because of the building slightly settling or what. I may need to go back in and slightly rotate it so the brickwork is more level. What would you do in this case?

One thing I'd try is a little more brick on the right. Was this shot from a slight angle? Once you start correcting perspective on a subject with this many straight lines and right angles, things can go quickly awry. It is sometimes better to have the original skew do to viewpoint rather than an un natural one introduced while trying to 'correct' things.

I agree with Chunk. You will need more brick on the right of the window. I would use the straightening tool vertically on the door frame, door window, or window center piece. (If you have it, that is. If not I suggest PSE 4.0 as a place to get it! It makes straightening pictures much easier! [end shameless product endorsement])

Anyway, I would concentrate on making the window vertically straight and it looks like the bricks will come along for the ride. The sidewalk is a bit sloped I think. (Look at the bricks at the base of the wall on either side of the door. It looks like there is more space at the bottom on the left side of the door than the right.)

That being said, this is a very attractive entry! Good eye!

    Hi.
I fear if you attempt to 'Right' the wrongs in this image, you will actually detract from a lovely mistake.

I have included here a snippet of your image.

I have placed three vert lines.

The bottom left of the window is further left than the top left hand corner.
The top right hand corner of the door, is further right than the bottom right hand corner of the door.

If the picture were tilited, you might beleive this would cure the problem.

But line three, on the door, shows the door is Vertical and parallel(?)

It is the construction of the brickwork that brings the illusion to the eye.

It drove me bonkers until I realised.
Its a great picture, the contrasts seem to strike 'newness', yet the kickplate at the bottom of the door says, 'age'.

John - It's definitely tilting clockwise there, probably about 1 - 3 degrees (most noticable at the top). I like the crop but in this situation, I feel that it would be better to keep the large view. It minimizes one's perception of the tilt - unless someone doesn't mind the tilt that is (maybe I'm too picky about that stuff).

Thanks Chunk...I cropped this tight because there was a small bush at the right side, and was intruding into the picture, so I cropped it a little and cloned out what was left of the bush. When I took this, I tried to make sure (using the viewfinder grid on the D70) to keep this level. I shot from across the street to get as much as I could in the frame. One of the things I'm planning on doing this summer is to go back to some of these places and try to improve on the shots that were hampered by dull skies, bad light, or shooter incompetance. I also want to look at different perspectives and angles. I didn't have a lot of time to fully explore this time around.

I'm with you there, GB. I think this is a case where I didn't really didn't get close enough to actually see the slight angle of tilt. Lesson learned

Thanks, Kizz. Until I took a really hard look, I hadn't been aware of what appears to be settling by the building.

    John,

Pretty much everything has been covered...but great shot nonetheless!

I'm with Kizz, the brick and sidewalk are so clean that they give a "new" look, but the "old" element is still there, its nice, I like it.
