    1st time IR

I have been thinking of sending my old DRebel off to LifePixel to have it converted for shooting in infrared. A friend of mine has an XTi that has been converted and he's letting me borrow it to see how I like it and help me to decide if I want to spend the money to have my DRebel converted. These are a couple of quick shots I took today while walking the dogs.

I like the second shot more than the first as the subject is more clearly defined, but in both I think I'd take the hit on the detail and boost the contrast with a curves adjustment as they feel a bit flat.

I agree with Jim here. Could be these specific scenes did not benefit very much from the IR effect as there is just a rather flat grey toning throughout making it hard to see any depth in these.
I don't know if you have tried or are using Lightroom, but there are some pretty impressive settings and adjustment in lightroom for creating the IR look from ordinary images, quite good results and the ability to tweak and tailor each image to bring out the best aspects.

I agree they look ok for testing shots. Try a subject with more tones. High contrast ect. I think you can also custom wb on a green target though I have never tried it. I use to simply reverse the red and blue channels in PS. There are all kinds of help on conversions on the internet.
I have an E1 out for a conversion now. It's about time for it to show back up.

Thanks for the feedback everyone. I'm hoping to get out some more this weekend to play around with this a bit more. It really is a whole new way of 'seeing' compared to what I'm use to

I like the 2nd one, I would like to buy a modded camera for IR and try it sometime.

Yes, not bad IR technique, but of course the old rules still apply as far as a subject. Actually I think the scenes would look better w/ normal color space because some color may offer some diversity.

I shot a roll of IR film once, E-6, and when I had it developed, it was completely overexposed - looked like I was looking through a clean window. I guess heat and who knows what affects it ..

    Re: 1st time IR

I pretty much agree with the other critiques here. Not the best infrared subjects, low contrast, overall flat grey tonality, little separation moving through the images, etc. If you do make the IR leap also invest in Nik Software Silver Efex Pro. I do a lot of infrared shooting (3 converted DSLRs and counting) and really love what infrared can do with contrasty landscapes, architecture, etc.
