    1st go at a sunset!

Probably one of the most photographed subjects I know, but as a beginner I would love some criticism of praise?! of my 1st attempt at catching the sun. One other thing, I'm using a canon power shot G7, with the wide angle converter you can buy for it. As good as it is being a compact, would upgrading to a DSLR. make a dramatic difference?

Not bad for a first attempt, but IMO you could crop off some of the bottom, and a tad off the top. The sun is still bright enough where it's a little burned out. You're on the right track though. I'd wait until it lowers more to the horizon, and you can get some good colors going.

Re: 1st go at a sunset!

Welcome to the forum. I agree with Johns critiques/suggestions here for you. Cropping up from the bottom to lose half the foreground and down from the top to lose the empty portion of sky may bring more impact. (A sort of square crop)
Wait for a more dramatic sky and use a fg subject a bit more interesting.
Using a DSLR in this scene would not give you a better picture. Although, with a vast variety of lenses and focal lengths to choose from you might have approached the scene differently to begin with.
Pose that question of DSLR over point and shoot in the Help
Files forum ( http://forums.photographyreview.com/...splay.php?f=29 ) or the Digital Cameras forum ( http://forums.photographyreview.com/...splay.php?f=27 ) and your likely to gather many good answers and information.
Looking forward to more pictures from you.

I totally agree with the idea of cropping off most of the black area (just below the tree). It has a flat feeling to it, almost like a Japanese painting... soft, relaxing, with interesting cloud formation.

Welcome to the forum too btw.

I like croping off the the bottom but I wouldn't crop any off the sky.
