thanks for the comments everyone. at first I wasn't sure what you guys were referring to about the ad, but thanks to afdlips, i understood a bit more after searching "maxwell ad" on google. Seems to be a pretty iconic image, and I remember seeing it at least once or twice. I agree, they do seem to have a connection. I guess it's true about what they say, that no art is truly "original" anymore. Frog, what's to tell? What do you want to hear about it?
Nice shot,, a little darker in some areas than I think it should be, but still well done. I would have used a vertical format instead (seems a little cramped). I like how dark the black is.

I'm no where near your or most peoples level here so just would like to know your set up and settings.
Basically how you managed to catch it.
Thankyou!
Outstanding, I really like the lighting and especially the hot spot in the hair. I first thoughts were about cropping a little on the right but not sure if that would work now that I looked at it for a while.

again, thanks for the comments everyone. gb and roger, i actually like it with even more on the right, like a panorama-ish shot, but that may be just me. the vertical crop is a good idea, I just think I have the tendency to vertical crop too much (sports shooter) so I was trying to shift away from it, and I think like the ad, it feels like the air is flowing across the image.

ok, this was shot with 1 britek bb-200 and my 430ex, both on light stands about 3 feet behind the subject, and right behind them a black background. The britek on the left had a reflector on it, 1/4 power. The 430ex (on the right) was set on 1/8 power, 28mm zoom length. The left light was just out of the frame, and the right one was a little bit farther out of the frame. Both about 7-8' high, pointed downwards at the face. no snoots or any modifiers, just head on lights. Both attached to PWs, and shot using my 1d and sigma 24-70 (which i just noticed is the review of the day). Shot in RAW and adobe RGB, opened in photoshop raw, crushed the blacks, used healing brush to get rid of the flare spots (the sigma tends to do that a lot) and just burned the black in to make it darker. then converted to black and white dropped the darkness of the yellows I believe, sharpen, resize, sharpen, convert to sRGB, save as jpeg 12. I hope that helps

Yep more on the Right would nail it for me, or a portrait.
