    18-55mm Kit Lens

Does anyone know if the kit lens supplied with the K2000 is the same as the model that was packaged with the K20D? Some reviews refer to the K2000 kit lens as a lightweight lens with a plastic mounting plate. Thanks for your help.

Hi Gary...I would imagine that they are the same lens. However, I haven't heard anything about a "plastic" mounting lens. Hopefully, someone will jump in here soon that has more info than me. I have 2 18-55's and neither are "lightweight". Mine came with my *ist DL's.

The K2000D's kit lens is indeed "built" around the K20D's/K200D's. But they aren't 100% identical.

    K2000D's kit: PENTAX SMC PENTAX-DAL 18-55mm F3.5-5.6 lens.
K20D/K200D kit: PENTAX SMC PENTAX-DA 18-55mm F3.5-5.6 AL II lens.

The DAL lens does have a plastic lens mount, re-engineered optical design, plus other "adjustments", to make the lens as lightweight and cheap to manufacture as possible – including removal of the MF distance-scale. I would imagine image quality to be a bit poorer as well, I've read already several people complaining of softness versus the DA AL II.

In the end the DAL is only a few grams lighter in weight, I would personally go with the DA AL II.

If I just ordered a K20D this morning and it states that it ships with a Pentax 18-55mm lens which do you think it will ship with?

    Thanks.

If it was a reputable seller, then that would almost certainly be the AL II version, since it was designed to complement the K20D's 14.6 MP resolution. Larger pixel-resolution sensors require lenses that can keep up with the MP's. So if you got a K20D use the best lenses you can afford, or you may end up with soft photos if the sensor out-resolves the lens.

I still have my kit lens, but I don't use it much, but I was going through some old photos, this one is a little on the soft side, but I thought the shot was good, so I'm posting.
