    Sigma 70-200 2.8 HSM

Nobody really knows it exists because its hard to find, but it seems to be a good alternative to the 50-200 SWD. HSM is Sigmas version of SWD.

It sells for 799 on Amazon.
The fixed focal ratio and lower price more than make up for those 20mm at the lower end IMO.

Does HSM work with the E3 though? If not you can find a 50-200 non SWD for less. Fixed F2.8 sure sounds nice though!

Here is some specs on the lens from the Sigma site. I think it would work well on the E3. Also PR's posting on the lens. You might could surf the reviews.

I have never had an issue with Sigma's lens quality. Without actually seeing any images I would still be inclined to go with the Sigma on price point alone. Fixed 2.8 FTW.

I went looking on Amazon and could not find it listed never mind a price for it. Do you have a link for the page?

That canon version got decent reviews on dpreview.com, image quality was 8.5 vs canons flavor 9.5, but it was only 1/2 the price so it won out in overall value. I wonder how it would do on the 4/3rds system since many of our cams have IS unlike the canon.

Thanks for the link. I now have it on my wish list at Adorama. Amazon is listing it but they sell it through Adorama.

Sorry for bumping up this thread but I'm dealing with a big problem.
Today I bought myself a Sigma 70-200 for my Olympus E500. What a great lens. However, I can't get the AF working. I tried the lens with a E520 in the shop where I bought it and it worked well. But no matter I try, it won't work.
As you have an E500 too I am wondering what I did wrong. Is it the firmware? Or the settings?

    TY

incase you havent already tried...just try to clean your contacts and put the lens back on.

couple of things that have happened to me before, i just wasnt paying attention:
i had the camera set to MF and it took me a sec to realize why my lens wasnt focusing.
once i put my lens on and it clicked in like normal, but it wasnt working right. so i just took it off and put it back on and it connected fine.

    Nope, just doesn't work either...
I took my 14-45 lens and I tried to make some picts with that and it works fine, no problem with the AF.

E500 + HSM has to work, right?

as far as i know, it should work just fine.
my 30mm has the HSM and it works great with my e-510.

are you far from the shop? would be good to bring it in to try on another body again, or try another lens on your body.

OK, I just found some internetpages which are saying that the HSM will work on the entire E-series indeed.

That shop is not quite far from here. Tomorrow I need to get my theory exam for my driving license (don't know how that's called in good English ), so after that I can go to the shop.
I tried all my other lenses and they are just working fine. Also tried to clean the contacts of the lens, without results...

However, thanks for the support!!

    FOUND IT!!!!

I decided to try to rotate the focusring, as I can still rotate the focusring at my Zuiko lenses when at the min. or max. focus length. So I rotated it a bit further and a bit more and more. Till I heart and felt some sort of 'click', probably a glass element what moved a bit to its right place. Suddenly the AF worked!!!
    Such an easy solution... :blush2:

    Guys,

Here are some quick test shots from early this morning and noon. I will try to make some more pictures I've added the EXIF data to the descriptions.
    http://s275.photobucket.com/albums/j...0test%20shots/

I will try to have a review next week as I will go to Zandvoort (racing track) next Tuesday. I hope the weather will be cloudy and maybe snowy, this lens has to make good picture in those conditions

    You are welcome!

Off course I will post the race track picts here They will also be visible at www.tachyon.nu (I am working for Tachyon Motorsport as photographer and webmaster).
I was at Zandvoort during the official introduction and tire-test of the Dutch GT4 Championship, here are all my photos: http://www.tachyon.nu/p/17/398/mo18-243.

Some time ago I managed to get this wonderful shot of the full moon with my Zuiko 40-150 lens:

As there will be a full moon at Friday, I will try to get at least the same shot but I will try to get it a bit better.

    Re: Sigma 70-200 2.8 HSM

I've added some new photo's from last night. Two of them are in the "Dec 10 Sigma test shots" folder. The full shoot can be found here: Dec 11 Moon. Also added the exif to the descriptions.

I started with these settings (I used these ones for my Zuiko 40-150):
    1/80 at f4.5
    ISO 100
    Light metering: Spot
    WB: Sun
Later on I started customizing these values as there were some thin and thick clouds in front of the moon.

I hope you can see the amazing quality of night shots. The lens can actually focus on a small amount of light. At all the photos I used the AF and it was very quick. However, at the very last photo the lens needed to search twice till it found the good point.

BTW, here are some shots of the Sigma lens and some of the E500 with Sigma 70-200 mounted.

HOLY CRAP! I severely underestimated the size of that lens.

I still cant decide between this and the 50-200 SWD. some people tell me this lens isnt sharp, is there anyway you can upload a crop of 100% magnification of a photo detailing its sharpness at F2.8 200mm?

    Re: Sigma 70-200 2.8 HSM

I just got this lens last week and it has yet to be removed from my camera. The only problem I have had so far is that because of the construction it really makes shooting in the cold harder than with the kit lenses because of the amount of metal in the lens. It caused the body to freeze up and lock up much faster than my other lens choices.

Other than that I love the clarity of this lens. On every aperture setting I have used it is sharper than the Bigma by about 75% Even wide open the images are sharp and crisp. Cannot wait to test out the macro capabilities.
