    The first was at 150mm
    ISO 400 F 5.0 shutter 200 Croped about 50 %
The second one at 300mm could use some work
    ISO 100 F 5.6 Shutter 200 . I think a little shake at Shutter 200 and 300mm
    Both hand Held
    Any help would be appreciated
    Thx Fred..

    Re: More 70-300 Test shots

Did this really need a separate thread?

Anyway, both shots seem very soft.... I had one of these lenses before myself, and although its not the sharpest lens in the Olympus lineup, its certainly far from being as soft as your images are.

What settings are you shooting with? What Jpeg compression? Maybe dont crop so much.

I shoot in RAW and Jpg . Sorry don't know Jpeg compression at this time.
I took some shots in Manual Mode last evening.

Very nice shot. I don't think it is underexposed. It looks good to me. It's sharp - and the color is great. I like the composition too.

Thanks for sharing. Keep up the good work - and post more shots as you get them.
It's a good way to learn. That lens is very nice, but it takes a lot of practice.

    Re: More 70-300 Test shots

I did some more experimenting. It takes very good shots in the sun or bright day.
Cloudy or dark days I have problems. Here is one on a very cloudy morning in a corner with less light
I had to use a tripod for this one. To bad I cannot hold still . More Coffee
    F 10.0 , Shutter 100 , ISO 800 300mm . Right out of the camera

I am of the opinion that these are soft also. Do you have a filter on the lens such as a UV filter? If you do I would highly suggest taking it off and taking a few more pictures for comparison. I bought a Nikon 70-300VR zoom a year ago and it had pictures like this and I was ready to put it on Ebay. Just before doing that I took the filter off and it made a huge improvement and I am now very happy with my lens. If you have a filter on your lens, try shooting without it on, Jeff

    Thankyou for the reply Grandpaw

I am not using filters with these pictures. Yes they are a little soft.
I don't know if its the lense or photographer .In my case most likley the photographer.
These pictures are right out of my E-520 . Just re-sized.
The Oly 70-300 gets best pictures at F 8.0 to F 9.0 . At least mine does anyway.
Any suggestions on soft picture improvements are Very Welcome.
Camera settings . PP rrograms etc.

    Thx
    Fred..

    Re: More 70-300 Test shots

I also have the E520 and use the 70-300mm a lot. I've found it to be a very good nature capturing lens, and pretty darn good macro. Here are a couple of shots I've taken with the 70-300, I don't find the lens to be soft at all. So it can be done ;) In addition it also produces some pretty nice bokeh :-)

and this one was taken in shadow but it still came out pretty sharp IME.

    Very nice pictures BettyG
What were the setting for the butterflys ?
I think half my problem is " Hand Held at 300 mm "
If you zoom in you can see a little Blur
Here is one at F 8.0 ISO 800 Shutter 250. Right out of my 520 .
At 300mm 250 shuttter hand held is not going tp produce a Sharp picture
I take my camera when I go hiking . Time to but a momopod

    Re: More 70-300 Test shots

For the butterfly in shade exif data: Exposure: 0.003 sec (1/320)
    Aperture: f/5.1
    Focal Length: 215 mm
and for the blue butterfly:Exposure: 0.004 sec (1/250)
    Aperture: f/6.3
    Focal Length: 263 mm
all handheld...I very seldom use a tripod. Do you use only auto focus or do you man. focus as well?

Gorgeous Swan, very nice shot, looks pretty sharp to me :-)

I use Auto-Fous , Spot metering and Spot Focus. for wild life
When I was shooting the Goose at 300mm I can really see my camera shake.
Maybe more coffee next time. LOL.

    A Macro
When I first got the lense I Assumed it is only for distant objects. Thx BettyG
After I took this , I was told to use Manual Focus for closer shots.

You did a fine job with this flower. The composition is excellent, it's sharp - and great color.

Looks like you're enjoying your lens......

'Bokeh' is the artistic use of the out of focus area (usually background). - TF
