I finally coughed up for a 50-200 SWD. I was indeed an avid bird photographer once-upon-a-time in point-and-shoot superzoom land, but the ZD 40-150 just wasn't doing it for me. Not fast enough, not quick enough, not long enough, not sharp enough, and not weathersealed. Off to ebay land it went, and I ordered this behemoth to replace it. I considered the bigma also, and the old version 50-200, but the build quality and speed of the SWD beat out longer and cheaper, respectively. I figure I have an E3 now, might as well take advantage of the "fastest autofocus" claim that olympus made with the SWD lenses...
In any case I've only fired off about 10 shots with it and I haven't put any of the computer; I haven't been free enough to get it outside yet and I want to give it a fair trial before I pass any judgment. Suffice to say that the lens is large and stupid heavy. it makes the 12-60 seem like a kit lens. no wonder it comes with it's own lens bag, complete with shoulder strap. oh well, the trade-off is that it oozes quality. And since it's weatherproof you don't have to worry about any of that ooze messing up the works.![]()
