Need comments about my pics

Hi all,
I took some close ups with the 70-300. I did not use macro mode or a tripod.
I did not touch up in Master2. I was about 3 feet away, couldn't AF any closer.
Can I get closer in Macro mode?
I am pleased with the results and lens so far.

Macro mode just sets the cameras DOF. The minimum distance is listed on the lens. 3 feet sounds about right. The 70-300 takes pretty good macros.

But how did the other member get so close in his pic of the bug on the leaf or branch?
The last pic in the other thread for 70-300mm pics.

Don't know but might have used extension tubes and/or cropped a lot out to make it look bigger.
