Another (Serious) Firmware Upgrade Problem!

I upgraded the firmware for my E-500, lenses and FL-36...no problems.

Then, just because I had the gear all out at the computer desk, I figured I'd upgrade my C-7070 as well, even though I had no interest in what the upgrade supposedly offered. Big mistake. ;)

Something happened during the upgrade...the software said to continue but when I did the camera froze. Now it does nothing...the lens doesn't even move in and out as it's turned on and off. The yellow and green lights blink...that's it.

I've never encountered this problem before and I have no idea what to do. I suppose I'm bound for the repair shop??

This may or may not relate to this thread, but everytime that I have ever tried to do to many Windows updates to my PC it will eventually crash and burn and I wind up reloading and starting from scratch. So I have learned just to leave it alone as long as it works.
My evolt 500 is on the way and will be here next week, I am not so sure that if the camera works I will ever do a filmware update. If something is working why mess with it. Unless someone can give me a very good reason otherwise? I know there maybe a noise issue with images at 800iso and higher, that a filmware update might fix, but I doubt I will ever shoot over 400iso. But then again this is my first DSLR. I would love to here more thoughts on this that would convince me to update the filmware...

well you will definily experience noise at even 400 in low light and even regular light condittions. i have a 300 and its got the same sensor as the 500. mines very noisy and thats why i figure that a firmware update will fix things up a bit.

I have posted two pictures in the critique forum, both shot at low light levels @400. I didn't notice much noise. Maybe mine came with the upgrade already. How do I look on camera to see? I do feel the lenses are a little slow or I just haven't got the camera set up right.

post a picture. like they dont look that bad when ther like sized down, but at 100% they are REAL noisy. maybe its just my camera. i think it needs the upgrade bad or a cleaning. even though from mu understanding it wont do much for the sensor.

I've never experianced any problems updating the firmware on either of my E-1 bodies or on any of my lenses. Now, I use Mac and can't comment on the stability of a Windows platform, other than the fact that my wife's new HP laptop has all sorts of problems with XP whenever she tries to do something new with the system. She now understands why I use Mac.

My E-500 is at firmware 1.0, and I am completely happy with it. I see no need to update.

yeah i have a mac too and for video editing its pretty stable. but i have been known to crash final cut once or twice. not the problem here. the problem is that stated before, you cant do the upgrade on intel macs which i have one. ther fast but the compatibility with older mac software and certain server things like this are a pain in the junk.

How long does it take to update the firmware in these Olys?

I really can't say how long it took, maybe 10 minutes. I did the firmware upgrades, (1.4) as soon as I took the cameras out of the boxes. I upgraded them using my old iBook, so I haven't tried downloading anything yet with my new MBP. I know the programmers at Oly have to be working on a Universal ap using the intel chipset. Gotta figure it's a lot simpler than doing a dual porting for both Mac and PC. Besides waiting for the new professional body from Oly, I'm also waiting on the universal version of Photoshop. I've look at the beta but haven't downloaded it yet, don't want to screw things up until I've got a hard copy in my hands. I've just got too much stuff on my systems to risk playing with a beta, even one from Adobe. Now, if I were still in the military, on the GI systems, I'd have been first in line baby! Tend to get a bit more conservative in the civilian world.
