What are some cheap and easy ways of creating a self watering system for my planters?

I am using waterbottles with a screw on long spike which is inserted into the soil..
Depending on the size of the container and the size of the water bottle I only have to refill once a week, or if it is a large container with plants requiring a lot of water twice a week.
