    iTunes Question

I hope someone here can help me with this. The info available on iTunes is a bit vague about this. I want to move my iTune library. I don't want to move it to another computer, though. I just want to move it to an external drive to free up some space. Is that possible and if so, how do I do it?

    Re: iTunes Question

Well, I copied everything to an external drive and pointed iTunes to the new iTunes folder. Then I deleted the iTunes content from the MyMusic folder. Now, of course, it doesn't work. I double-checked my preferences to make sure it's pointing to the external drive and I even restarted. But iTunes doesn't recognize the new location. What am I missing?

It doesn't like your choices in music?

Can you play the music from the external? If not, maybe the problem was some button you didn't click when moving the files?

    Funny

Yeah, if I go to the files and double click, they open in iTunes. But iTunes doesn't show the database anymore. I copied everything in the iTunes folder so I think it's all intact. I think I just missed some important step. I expect it's all fixable. I just need someone with the right k-nowledge.

John, I am by no means an iTunes expert, but I think you may have to import everything again. Under FILE in iTunes, you might try the IMPORT feature, or the ADD FOLDER TO LIBRARY...

I think pointing iTunes to your new music folder in 'prefs' may only affect newly ripped CDs and such...

I did it once but forgot the details. But what comes to mind is just changing the file location in Preferences.

    Re: iTunes Question

there is an easier way to do it...
select edit preferences then choose the advanced tab you will see a window displaying the iTunes Media folder location. You can click on the change button and select where you would like your files moved to. Make sure that the "Keep iTunes Media folder organized and "Copy files to Itunes Media folder when adding to library" options are ticket (you can turn them off later if you want) click ok
then select file, library, organize library.
Tick the box for "Consolidate files" and I also recommend you tick the box for "Upgrade to iTunes Media organization" now depending on the size of your library either go make a coffee, a cocktail or six or go take some photos as Itunes goes about moving the files for you. when you are done double check that they are in the new location then check that they are no longer in the old location and delete them if required (you shouldn't need to)
it can also be worthwhile before you do this choosing file, show duplicates and deleting any accidental double copies you might have, unless the tracks are on different albums and you might want to listen to the complete album in that case leave the duplicates alone. When you are done deleting your duplicates selct file, show all.

Note that this is for a PC, on a mac some of the menu names change, but the steps are essentially the same. If you need me too I can check on my mac at home and get back to you but I can't check until tonight.
