    Ie 7.0

For those interested Microsoft released IE 7.0 this morning at microsoft.com

If you download it what do you think ....better or worse?

And do any of you plan on going with Windows Vista when it's released?

    Just curious

I am quite happy with Opera and Firefox, no plans to use IE7.

Vista: Won't upgrade existing computers from XP. Any new computers will have it preinstalled.

    Re: Ie 7.0

I'm with mwfanelli...I love Firefox, and will probably download 2.0 when its released. There is no way I am going to install vista on my laptop, because I don't anywhere near the RAM to run it. I have 256, and will put in another 512 in the next month or so. Vista reccommends at least one gig to run smoothly, of course more is always better. New computers wil already have it installed, but I wonder if the price of computers will increase when Vista is launched and installed.

    Re: Ie 7.0

I will eventually upgrade to IE7 just on principle, after I give them a few months to work the bugs out (see Itunes 7 thread for lesson learned)

OT, I think right now is a terrible time to buy a computer. Though prices are in the dirt, within the next year it seems there will be a couple of significant upgrades that are worth waiting for.

You mentioned Windows Vista, it might not be a helpful improvement, but it might be worth waiting for. The "gadgets" feature sounds pretty cool.

High Definition DVD's (or Blue Ray, whichever survives the holiday season) will be available in computers next year. I'd hate to buy a computer or DVD drive this year just to have to upgrade it to an HDDVD next year.

I'm still waiting for computers to come with internal "windows media extenders" that let you wirelessly connect your computer to your stereo & tv, or run lighting and appliances in your house wirelessly. These devices are still sold separately and seem to have low realiablity.

    Just imho.

I'm happy with Firefox too, and hardly ever us IE anymore. As far as Vista goes, when it comes time to upgrade my desktop computer, it will be with a Mac. It's a ways down the road, but that's the plan for now.

    Re: Ie 7.0

I use Firefox at home but IE at work. I'll update to IE7 at work, but will wait awhile like Rick mentioned. I've heard a little about Vista and won't upgrade this computer to do it - it's still fine but at 4+ years old I'd be better off with a new machine if I wanted to do that. But then I'm still using my "ancient" Fuji S2 and drive a stickshift...

Vista will upgrade...if your computer is up to it hardware wise. The three I use the most all tested OK for the upgrade hardware wise.

What does bother me is that they are saying their own software, such as Office 2000 and so on will not work with Vista. Even things such as Photo Shop & PS Elements will not be compatable. Thats where it almost seems like a scam by software manufactueres and now we'll have to upgrade all our software in order to run the Vista.
After seeing and using IE 7.0 I don't think it's all that great and it makes me think Vista is going to be the same story. In order to get Vista that would actually do any good for most of us here you'd have to get the Vista Business or Max versions and they are not cheap. From what I have seen I'll stick with Xp and if I upgrade it will probably be to a MAC.

    Hey, I drive a stick!

    And, use manual cameras

Here's the official Vista webpage for anyone who hasn't looked it up yet. They are offering trial versions of it for download if anyone is willing to give it a shot!

    Re: Ie 7.0

I don't have a sacrificial computer to load Vista on, but I don't reckon it's worth it.
XP is the first windows version that I'm happy with - since I worked on 0.95 OEM and every release since ... that's lots! .

Nor do I think the Office 2007 UI is any good for people trained for yers to do it the old way.

IE7 will not touch my computer if I have a choice.

Firefox and Thunderbird replace IE and Outlook - and good riddance.

I loaded IE 7 and am satisfied.
There are more options for the menu and tool bar plus the tab which makes it easier to open new windows.
I also like how the favorites list disappears after clicking the selection.

    Re: Ie 7.0

I'll stick with Firefox. I only use IE for two things, and those are rare occassions.

I have no plans to upgrade to Vista in the near future. If I can afford to get a Thinkpad T60 in the near future, I will either get it with XP Pro or put XP Pro onto it. I made that mistake once with Windows ME...I won't make it again.

John, if you're worried that the software won't work with Vista, don't upgrade. A lot of businesses won't upgrade for that very reason.

    Re: Ie 7.0

I just downloaded IE 7. Now, all the text on all my webpages looks "blurry." On sign-up, I clicked to use IE's "visual optimizer" or whatever. I assume that's causing the problem. Now I can't find the option in IE to turn it back off. Any help?

Apparently the view of the computer types is that Vista will be still full of glitches and incompatibility issues until June or July of 2007. It is probably more designed for 64 bit, core duo machines with added backward compatibility for 32 bit applications.

The general recommendation is to wait until you need a new computer and don't upgrade an old one with the new operating system.

The other problem, I have found with general Windows upgrades is that they are often not compatible with some virus and spyware protection programs or don't work with applications that don't have microsoft approved drivers etc.

Where do you get this stuff? Some stuff will be incompatible - there is no way around that. Visual Studio 2005 doesn't work with Vista, but an upgrade is scheduled for April.

As for how it's designed, it's not based around a 64 bit codebase. It's based around the code used in Windows Server 2003, which is a 32-bit operating systems. Yes, there is a version that works on AMD 64 and takes advantage of the new 64 bit features (but these aren't true 64-bit machines anyway...).

The other problem, I have found with general Windows upgrades is that they are often not compatible with some virus and spyware protection programs or don't work with applications that don't have microsoft approved drivers etc.
    Any specific examples?
