While looking around Barnes and Noble I saw this Title

which I thought was a clever rip off of this one

which is a novel published in 1974 about a motorcycle trip taken by a guy and his troubled son and was kinda popular.

I was also surprised to see that there is now a guidbook to the novel.

I don't know if the bicycle book is worthwhile or not - just attracted to the title.

Zinn and the Art of Mountain Bike Maint. was his first book and is actually a pretty good how to fix your bike book. You won't find any deep meanings in it though )

I'm actually a few chapters in to Zen right now and I have to say it is pretty darn good. Coming from a guy who reads nonfiction almost exclusively.

Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance was a classic back when I was in graduate school. It stayed on the best seller list for a very long time. It not only involves the father and son trying to communicate, it does so through Zen (fake or not!) and the routines of maintaining their bikes on a road trip. It is a shame that the son later committed suicide.

I took a quick look at that bicycle book, nice but not too much different than other manuals I've see. Points for ripping off the title of the other in a funny way!

Life's too short to read fiction

I'm one of these fools who wants to learn everything. So when I'm not watching American Idol it's usually TLC, Discovery, PBS, HGTV, etc. And the vast majority of my reading is textbooks for class so that doesn't leave much time for other stuff anyway...

When I do read other books it's usually spiritual/inspirational/financial/"self-help" stuff.

Life is too short not to read fiction. I like to call those my fluff books. I read a lot, and a good portion of the time it is "learning" stuff. I'm a how to person. I need to know how to do everything, and I learn best from books. However, there is nothing that can top a hot bath, a good fluff book, and a Frappacino on ice.

I leave the "hot bath, frapamochawhatever and candles" thing up to my gf. I like to soak in a hot tub every once in a while but damn those bubble jets! What is it with girls and bubble jets?!"

Okay, I'd pass on the bubble jets and the candles. I like to be able to read my fiction without eyestrain. I like Aveda oils and windowlight.

You know, when I was in school, my report cards always said "Adina is a very nice girl and does good work, but she does need to remember to save her visiting for approriate times"

Life's too short to read fiction

There are a lot of human truths that can't be completely or meaningfully expressed in non-fiction. So just because it's fiction doesn't mean it doesn't have value or you can't learn anything from it. The great novels are great because of the things they teach us about ourselves.

I probably agree with that. It's just been so long since I've read a fiction book I can't remember what I learned

The Motorcycle Mainenance book promises to be very rewarding, if I ever find time to pick it up again.

I guess I tend to view fiction as pretty escapist. Not that there's anything wrong with escaping. I'm just in a long pattern of digging in, that's all.

I hope I don't sound pretentious, I'm sure you guys will get all over me if I do ;)

for me, the measure of a good book is how long it takes me to read it. If I pick it up, and can't put it down, then it's great. If I have a hard time sitting down and reading, then it's not so good. For me, fiction pulls me in a lot faster than non-fiction.
