    Can Somebody - Thanksgiving

There are lots of opportunities this and every holiday season to do a little bit of good and truly be thankful. This is a simple and very important one to consider. Food banks and kitchens are perennially short on supplies. Take in a case or two of food.

While doing your grocery shopping add a case of cans of something. Then just drop the whole case at the local food pantry, homeless shelter, or soup kitchen of your choice. It doesn't matter what it is, they will find a use for it and somebody will have a little more. The 'extras' as below often are forgotten. A few of us also help with Holiday Breakfasts too! Not just cereal juice and toast, we go the whole route with pastries and omelets. OK we have a chef who kicks in a few hours which helps!

I don't make many public pleas of this nature, but I've worked with this type of program for many, many years ranging from Senior Programs to Food Banks and they always need stock. So put this in your thinking and remember that it is an all year around need!

Somebody is going to get a bunch of green bean casserole, and not just canned green beans with this lot!! This is just one case I dropped off at a kitchen.

    HAPPY THANKSGIVING TO ALL!!

    Re: Can Somebody - Thanksgiving

Thanks for posting this reminder. I work for a non-profit organization and we have a food pantry that has been running low in stock this year. We also lost one of our usual Thanksgiving Day benefactors; consequently, as of last Friday we were still almost 100 turkeys short of what our need is.

However, people are GENEROUS. Since putting the word out there, we are receiving many responses and the turkeys as well as other food items and special donations have been coming in!

I think your post is a great reminder that when we give to others, it does as much for us as it does for the persons who receive it. I know for me personally it makes my Thanksgiving and Christmas a lot more joyful.

Nice pic. Warhol would be proud...

I just finished shooting a story on a local food bank a few weeks back, and found the whole experience very inspiring. The woman that runs it is in her 80s, and has more energy than anyone I know...

We actually had a dilemma in shooting the story. At the time I was there, the shelves were packed, due to some timely donations. As I'm sure you know, this is not always the case.

It made for interesting visuals, but the people that run the place were afraid the stocked shelves would make it appear like they had more food than they could handle (they didn't by any means).

In the end we decided to shoot as is, and figured the magazine story would educate readers to their needs. They made it clear that food goes out as quickly as it comes in, and there is never enough.

Personally, I am drawn to charities that directly impact the lives of locals without a huge overhead or fundraising costs, and food banks are one of the best...
