Cool Will prices drop on brand new lens?

I think I am in love.

The new ( Nikon Lens AF-S DX VR Zoom-Nikkor 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6G IF-ED ) is the one for me.

But it JUST came out this month, its $700.00, and I am wondering... will the price come down much over the next several months as internet suppliers gain stock?

I have been using the same lenses for over a decade, but am finally ready to go DSLR. Since I have been happy with the 35mm equipment I had, I have paid no attention to the pricing trends on new equipment and would appreciate some input from those who know.

    Thanks in advance.

I doubt it. Nikon lens prices rarely drop although sometimes they do a little after the initial shortage goes away. I think this is more of a case of retailers trying to get a premium while they can instead of Nikon dropping the price later, but I'm just guessing here.

Some lenses have rebates from Nikon, but not all of them. I've considered the 12-24 DX lens which has never had a rebate since it's been introduced, but others like the 70-200 f2.8 VR almost always have a rebate offered. The first lens I mention has been out now for about three years, so it's not the "newness factor" here. Hard to say if this new lens will make the rebate list, but if so I doubt it would be right away.

I want this one too. But only after I've seen a good technical test of it from a reputable source which measures things like resolution, vigneting, distortion, chromatic aberation.. It would be silly to put a lens like this on the D200 only to discover that it couldn't match the resolution of the sensor. However Nikon will sell it with the D200 and they are positioning it in the pro category so keep hoping..

The price on this lens won't go down. The best deal will be to buy it in a kit with the D200 (200$ saved?).

Not likely. The prices don't usually drop at all on lenses until a newer model replacing it comes out. I paid 1600 for my original 70-210 f2.8L USM 7 years ago, and it didn't drop to 1000 until the lens got upped by the IS version selling for the same price.

Re: Will prices drop on brand new lens?

Since it's shortage, everybody is selling higher than $700.
So far, Nikon can't keep up with the demand. (Due to this high demands I think Nikon is selling some Made in Japan lens as well. I think originally the lens was manufactured from south asia, not in Japan.)
I received mine today and it's made in Japan. Also, the Adorama where I bought mine had put new higher price on their website.
One more thing is the VR model lens that performs well, don't drop the price much at all.
