Use of Existing Nikon Lens w D-80

I have two Nikon lenses and was wondering if they will work on a DSLR I am considering: a Nikon D-80.

1. Nikon IX-Nikkor 60-180mm

2. Nikon AF Nikkor 28-80mm

I plan to get at least one new lens(probably the 18-135 AF-S), but wanted to know if these two would even work?

the AF Nikkor 28-80 will work, the IX-Nikkor will not.

The 28-80 will act more like a 42-120 (with the DX sensor there's a 1.5x mag/crop factor).

You will want to get the 18-135 AF-s lens, since you'll probably be wanting your wide angle back.

I thought that if you use an old 35mm lens on a crop sensor digital camera then you lost reach rather than gained it. I must have got the whole thing back to front but if I understand what has just been said then a 200mm film lens will act like a 300mm lens when used on a crop sensor DSLR, is that right ?

That's right. Multiply whatever your lens is by 1.5

So this could be a solution to get a bit more reach without spending lots more money then. I have a 70 - 300mm but trying to get up to 400mm without compromising lens speed has proved to be impossible without laying out $$$$.
I will start having a look at older 300mm film lenses which should give me an equivalent of 450mm, right ?

Yes but so does your 70-300 unless you want a prime.
If your 70-300 isn't enough reach you may want something that goes at least 400.
Perhaps a sigma 50-500?

Ah I see, now it makes sense.
I have been toying with the idea of the sigma 50-500 but I'm a bit dubious about the quality and its a pretty slow lens.

Use the 28-80 for now and see what you feel like you're missing. Personally, I think I'd miss the wide end more than the long end but that's just me.

I was just on a vacation, thinking that if Nikon had about a 12-85mm with VR it would have been the perfect single lens. The 18-200 is reakky nice but I found myself wishing the 18 was wider many times more often than I used anything above about 85. But it's hard to buy what doesn't exist.

Have a look at the 16-85VR. It only goes to 16mm (24mm view) but it's really solid, has better image quality and is more compact than the 18-200. I use the 16-85 unless I'm sure I'm going to need that extra reach.
