D90's NEF and CS4?

I just ran into the snag I've heard of with cs4 not being able to read the camera's raw files, which is disappointing considering it could from my d40. Is there anyway around this (that keeps cs4/bridge in the loop)? Will the current version of Capture allow me to edit my raw images? View Nx will let me view them, but that's it.

CS4 should open the D90 RAW files. Do you have the latest version of Adobe Camera Raw (ACR)= v5.5? I know nothing about Bridge. - TF

try converting them to .dng files. THey take up less space, and everything's imedded in the image itself. You can get a free converter from adobe.

Nikon Capture NX2 (or NX2 as it's usually called) is fully compatible with D90 NEF's. I don't think that older versions (NX, Capture 4) support the D90.

Looking more closely, I see that you need to download version 2.1.0 (or later - latest version is 2.2.0) to open D90 NEF files. Use the "Update" option in the "Help" menu.

CS4 WILL read NEF RAW files from a Nikon D90 if you get this update. I have downloaded it and I can now read the NEF files from my D90, Jeff

What error messages are you getting?
What is your version of NX2?
What operating system are you running under? Vista 32 or Vista 64?

I've just upgraded to NX2 2.2.2 which supports the D3000 and the D300s (not that I need either). I haven't had any problems but then I'm running Vista 32 OEM and I have NX1 installed as well.

Apparently it hasn't dawned on some software developers that 64 bit operating systems are upon us. If you want to use more than 3GB of RAM on your PC then a 32 bit operating system is not enough. Example: I just bought a SAMSUNG portable PC with 4GB of RAM - which doesn't support Vista 64. The NVIDIA video driver crashes the system. Apparently video driver problems are the number one cause of Vista blue screens.

The prerequisites for the version that I just installed are (Vista SP2 or WXP Pro SP3 or WXP Family SP3) 32 bits preinstalled and .NET 2. Quite a limitation (how about Windows 7?). People on Internet say NX2 will run on 64 bits Vista but there might be problems installing.

Clicking on a NEF file to open / launch results in: Cannot load file D:\X\DSC_123.NEF

Interestingly in View NX in the top left is the RAW tab. Clicking on that will bring the file in RAW / NEF. So I'm somewhat confused as to what is going on.

I think that your "Cannot load file" comes from your NX2 version. My copy of NX2 is registered with Nikon and in the Help section of the program there's an "Update" option that takes me to the Nikon Message Center. Every time there's an update available I get a message and I just download it from there. Latest version is 2.2.2

The Nikon France web site says that it is planned to make available versions of NX2 (and a load of others) that are compatible with Windows 7 32 and 64 bits. However NX and Nikon Capture are not compatible Windows 7.

BTW you're only going to be able to use 3GB of your 6GB on a 32 bit operating system so make sure your Windows 7 is 64 bits

Yes, I run the RC Win 7 as 64 bit. Unfortunately, we here in Australia have not as yet been granted the family X3 licence the Americans have. One is also not sufficiently happy with the Nvidia drivers for 64 bit as I've experienced stability issues. I'm in no hurry to go to Win 7 as XP Pro has done a fine and stable job up to now, nonetheless it's just around the corner and once one is certain of the availability of drivers and some other issues we'll clamber onboard.
