    New Fisheye Lens

I got my tax refund and quicly ran out and bought the Nikkor 10.5 mm f2.8 fisheye, my dream lens. What a sweet lens. Very light and small, it covers 180degrees in a rectangular format. My question is, with this lens do I still need the Sigma 10-20 mm.

    Re: New Fisheye Lens

Congrats on the new toy Don. Fisheyes are a lot of fun to play with. That being said, I find that you can quickly over use a fisheye lens. A few shots here and there are great, but I wouldn't want to look at an entire album of fisheye photos from someone's vacation. I have never used the Sigma 10-20mm but I have taken a couple test shots with the Canon 10-22mm. (I have the Tokina 12-24mm.) For me, the regular wide angle lens gets used much more than the fisheye. I really like the lack of distortion that I get from a "regular" WA lens, verses the major distortion you get from a fisheye. The super WA lens to have a bit of distortion around the edges, but nothing like the fisheye.

Oh yeah, and watch your feet! It's easy to include your feet in the photo when using a fisheye.

    Re: New Fisheye Lens

I've wanted one since it came out, and I already have the Sigma 10-20. So, yeah, both!

Like Mike says, they're different tools for the job. Lots of fisheye shots gets old really fast, but one or two in a group can be outstanding. They're tough to shoot but I've had a little experience with them, and sometimes you need something like that to really get a great shot.

I can't see your example because of my work connection, but I keep getting reminded that it's such a great lens...

    Re: New Fisheye Lens

I want one. I bought a Holga fisheye camera from Urban Outfitters last winter, and finally loaded it up with film a couple weeks ago. Quickly discovered what does and does not look good! But I really, really want a *real* fisheye lens now to put on my digital and just play. I do so much like variety.

Congrats Don. Since i donot have a 10-20 mm, I will often use the lens correction in adobe and then crop out a nice wide pano. Just keep the horizon leveled when shooting.
Please ask to edit photos and I'll do the same!
    Thx, Rod

Opus: I also bought the fisheye Holga from a salesman who didnt have the Nikkor in stock.. I just wasnt satisfied so I went somewhere else.
Rod: I love panos. I've always been a wide angle man.
