    D40 lens compatibility..

I am wondering about my nikon and what kind of features of things do lenses work with it. I know that only certain AF-S lenses with motors built into them have auto focus, Im not worried about that.

But, Do older lenses work with the D40's metering and stuff? I tried to put one of my old primes onto the camera, and I had to use manual mode, and set all the shutter speed and aperture all manually. I don't care about manual zoom, because I love that, but setting shutter speed is a pain.

Are there other lenses that are non AF S but have metering?

The lenses I have are over 20 years old.

    Re: D40 lens compatibility..

Your lenses are likely Nikon AI or AI-S manual focus lenses. These do not have a CPU to transmit lens information to the camera, and the camera does not have the AI aperture coupling to connect it to the aperture ring and read the set aperture.

To have auto exposure metering with those on a Digital SLR, you would need a D1 series, D2 series, D200, D300, or D3 body. (I think the Fujifilm S5 pro might too).

However, all Nikon AF lenses that are not AF-S/AF-I will mount on your D40 and they *will meter* with auto exposure in all modes, just without autofocus.
