I have a new Nikon 35mm 1.8 on a DX body. If you look at the pic of the lens - it appears to be two small specs on the lense - my question is, is this normal ? does it look like dust - the lense is new - 1 month old. will this have any effect on photos ?
Those are not normal, and if they're on the surface, careful cleaning should remove them. If they are inside, then it's time for warranty service (assuming it actually is new, and not just new to you but used.)
If they are actually chips in the glass rather than foreign material, then that's probably kinda too bad.
The only way to know if they affect the pictures is to take some pictures and look.
It looks like something solid on the surface of the lens.
- Try using a blower first. If you use a canned-air aerosol then follow the instructions and don't get it too close to the lens element
- If that doesn't work then try using a moistened kleenex folded into a flexible tube and very gently work at one of the spots. Don't be brutal - if the thing is solid and has sharp edges then it may scratch the lens surface
I don't think that these things will show up on the image, except perhaps at the smallest apertures (f16). The one on the edge might not show up at all - remember that the camera cuts off part of the image circle produced by the lens to make a rectangular image..
