    young buck

Heres two shots from a week or so ago. first one taken with my new 70-200 (second one - was taken chronologically first with my 18-135). i was out backpacking, hadn't seen anything all trip until i saw this buck about 10 minutes from the car, noone else in my party saw it until i pointed it out, and it was only 50 feet off the trail. made me glad i lugged the lens the whole trip though.

    these are full frame.

Nice shots Dylan. I'd love to get some good deer shots.

I love your #1 shot - great colors and the bent branch really frames the buck nicely.

I think that one would print up nicely cropped in slightly.

    Nice job!

Thanks scott, we see them so often here ( we have a doe in our yard at 5pm everyday) that i normally just ignore them, adn try not to hit them with my car. i rarely try to photograph them.... but most don't have antelers either :-P

thanks loupey, #1 was my favorite to because of the framing and the pose. it was really hard to avoid all the branches between us ( like you can see in the 3rd shot) i was playing around with cropping it, but i'd like to see how you would, if you would.

Sure! I feel the big trunk on the left side to be distracting so I would elimate that. Doing so requires the small tree on the right to be cropped out to maintain balance. Lastly, I would off-set the buck's head slightly to the right of center.

thanks loupey all my crops i was trying to leave to much in :-D including the tree on left. it has enough to frame it with the curving tree

thanks paul, i was happy to come upon it so close and with my camera gear, i just had to dig through my bag for the 70-200 very quickly.

Personally and from an amateur perspective I like your second shot Dylan. I think the way the deer blends into the forest is very nice and I like the pose too. Your crop shot would be very nice too if you had not had his nose slightly behind the tree. I would suggest you try some more deer shots its good practice if nothing else.
