Considering the condition it's in, I would guess it was a reddish or cream goop?
One of the first things they do after inflating their wings from the shapeless bags in the pupa is to get rid of the excess fluid as the wings dry to the point they can fly.
It's all hydraulics, the veins in the wings are used to pump them up and flatten them out to flying condition, but then the fluid is discarded after the wings firm up.

PAul i would have given you a thousand guesses , but from now on you just get two . Either you know your moths or you got the same thing on your hands at one time or another

So far in all the butterflies and moths I've raised form caterpillars, the discharge has been one of two colours, both rather icky

The colour seems to be related to the basic wing colour in two examples.
Tortoiseshell - redbrown wings - red.
Buff Tip - cream wingd - cream.
But I wouldn't go as far as to generalise from that

    Yes.
Moths would breed in the tank, no problem.
Butterflies needed a lot of room for the mating flight and we never managed it.
So had to collect caterpillars instead.
