    WINTER 2010 Bird ID Thread

Best shot I could get of this fast little bugger. I think this is a rose breasted nuthatch?

Yep, I believe you are correct. Never seen one here at our feeders, but we have a lot of white-breasted ones.

Re: WINTER 2010 Bird ID Thread

Not the best shot, I have two others but this was the only one where it was facing forward.

I thought it was a sparrow till it turned around and saw the speckled breast. It was a bit larger than a house sparrow, but much smaller than a robin. The head reminded me of a robin, so I'm thinking maybe some sort of small thrush?

Thanks Paul I'm getting a bit better at this.

Isn't it an odd time of the year for a hermit thrush to be in Northern IL? I thought they winter further south.

They are found in the 20 degree winters in NJ in very small numbers. Must not be the sharpest tool in the shed huh

It's a swainson's hawk. Where and when did you shoot this because they are found west of the mississippi river usually.

I was just outside of Glacier National Park (Montana)... driving towards the southern portion of the park. Raptors were EVERYWHERE!!!! Harriers and Hawks of every kind on every fence post! I was in heaven!

    Going through some old shots...

#1 was in Rocky Mountain National Park

#2 was in MI last year... I didn't get a clear shot, so I don't know if it's enough to ID

#3 here in Chicago late summer... thought it might be a female goldfinch, but not sure.

#4 here in Chicago early fall.

Re: WINTER 2010 Bird ID Thread

    clarks nutcracker
can't tell, but looks to be a heron(great blue)
flycatcher (empidonax) which is hard to ID visually and best ID'd by call. looks to be a willow fly if I had to guess based on habitat

    last is a common grackle.

A little help on ID please

    Sorry about the photo quality.
I pumped the contrast to help with the ID on pict #2.
The birds head was in the shadows of the tree trunk.
These guys were quite noisy and hunting bugs in the bushes along the bank of a stream.

I have two birding books Field Guide to Birds Western Region- by Stokes and
Birds of Colo. Field Guide- by Tekiela and my wife and me could not find this little guy.

    thanks

With that clue, the BofC Field Guide shows an Oregon Dark-Eyed Junco that looks pretty close.
