    Wilson's Snipe

We had our first significant snowfall last night, about 2 inches, and my husband and I went for a long walk in the woods this afternoon. We didn't see many birds, but we did come across half a dozen snipe foraging in a big ditch. Most of them flew away, but this one froze long enough for me to get a shot. We see them quite regularly at this time of year, and they usually do freeze, relying on their camouflage to protect them, which makes them fairly easy to photograph. But with the snow, I guess they realized their camouflage was not as effective.

Nice shot for a bird that is not easy to take shots of.

Thanks for commenting, folks. Paulnj, we have Wilson's Snipe here all year, but our winters are pretty mild here on the west coast. We're actually in the same planting zone as northern Florida even as far north as Vancouver Island. Unfortunately, we don't get as much sun as Florida though, especially in winter.
