With their high metabolism, I always wondered how they can get enough water when it's arctic cold out.
It was probably less than 10°F this morning and windy and I couldn't stand to have my bare hands out for more than 5 minutes at a time. Followed this red-breasted nuthatch to a now frozen puddle. Looked to me like he was trying to pry under it.
Uncropped with the 300mm + 2x. He must have been pretty thirsty as I was able to get even closer than this while lying on my stomach.
