What to do when the lighting is bad?

I was out looking for loons and other water based critters over the weekend, but the lighting was so bad, I didn't take a single photo with my DSLR. Instead I went exploring with my G9. Since the lighting was so bad for stills, I thought I would shoot some video using the G9. (The video makes it look like I had a lot better light than what I really did.) I would much rather be shooting stills, but when the lighting isn't working, it's fun to have another option to play with.
