    Whale breeching

My wife and I went on an Alaskan cruise in June of this year. I had just recently purchased my Nikon D200 with an 18 - 200mm VR lens which I used to take these shots.

We were very lucky to not only see what we saw, but to see it from so close. Our guide told us that she only gets to see a whale breeching once a month or so and she goes out twice a day.

I took over 1,000 pics that afternoon. Good thing I had a 16gb card with me. I am also so glad that I had a VR lens because the boat we were on was rocking back and forth with the movement of the water and had I not had a VR lens I doubt that I would've gotten these shots.

Amazing. How many people on this planet can say they've witnessed this event? Not many. And to think that I was excited watching chinnook salmon jumping last week.

I like #3 of your first post the best. Although not at the apex of the breech, I like how the water is still flowing over the fin. Excellent job getting the focus as this series looks nice and sharp.

A 16GB card!? I'm still using only 2GB ones. Haven't looked at what out there in a long time.

    Very cool!

My wife and I went on a whale watch earlier this year. No breach was witnessed but did see a lot of tails. One swam right under our boat. Until you see one "up close" you don't really realize just how big these animals are.... the one tailfin that we saw was easily 9 to 10 feet across.
