    Western hognose

here's one from a series taken while cleaning cages...not the most inspired of situations, but she was coiled so nicely that I just removed the glass door and fired away. This is with the H5's native lens. I always forget how wonderfully capable the macro function is, now that I have the close-up lens.

I find that the close-up lens is helpful for getting extremely close to skittish critters, because the working distance is a foot away. The native lens, however, is far superior for critters who don't care that you are in their face. It may not get as close, but the DoF is nice for moderate to large subjects, as far as herps go. at about 1.5x zoom (45-55mm in 35mm) the distortion is minimal, although there is definately some compression (or lack there of) issues toward the edges of the frame - objects in the center of the frame which ARE closer to the lens look closer than they should, although objects at the same distance do not distort at all.

I think I am going to shoot naked a bit more often now, this series reassured my trust in the native lens' ability!

I like the 2nd image of the original post a lot. Although you can't see the coils as well, I like the detail in its eye! Nice job.

    Thanks!

I keep a handful of herps, mostly stuff I've found in the wild or have come through the CHS adoptions program (www.chicagoherp.org). We get a lot of confiscations from the city of chicago, not to mention owner give-ups. My primary fascination is finding them in the wild, so my collection is slowly starting to reflect this. Hang out in this forum long enough, and you'll see most of them I am sure

    thank you Bev!

I adjusted the white balance, my diffuser gives images a red cast so I cooled them off a bit. The white balance is pretty natural now. I gave them a one point S curve in curves - just one tone more contrast on each side. I cropped to aspect ratio - I like the 2:3 ratio, it looks better to me than 4:5. I resized to 700 pixels and applied smart sharpen at 0.3 px radius, 80% or so. The last shot got a little burn around the edges, but I now think that it needs a little dodge in the center. Oh well, a work in progress!! I am often surprised at the shots that come out of this $350 USD camera.
