    Waimea Canyon Locals

Found these little buggers last year while on Kauai.

#1. This was what I saw first.. If you look really hard, you can see them down in the lower left corner.

#2. After I took the first shot, one of 'em must have moved and they got my attention so I zoomed on in and this is what I found.

#3. They decided to admire the vie of their back yard..

#4. I watched them as they picked their way across the lower canyon's rim.

    Re: Waimea Canyon Locals

nice photos, i really like the 3rd one.

wild goats are everywhere on the big island. when i was there in september, (visiting my cousin) we scared up many goats, but i didn;t get to many good photos as we wer always really close so they ran. its amazing what environmet they can live in. we were near the kona airport which is just a huge lava field with sparse vegitation and there were herds of them there.

Very nice. Sure something a little different. I didn't know Hawaii had wild goats.
Don't forget about the Gallery. Are your photos there??

These are different images of goats than you typicly see. You did a great job at showing us not only the goats, but the habitat they live in.

One thing many people don't realize is that the sights and sounds don't always match out there.

In addition to goats, roosters and chickens in the distance can kind of spoil the moment

    Thanks for the images!

Yeah, I had never considered "wild" goats. Having roots in the south, when I think "goat", farm raised animals come to mind, or perhaps mountain goats. Never would I have thunk of a farm goat living as his mountainous cousin...

As for roosters and chickens, Kauai has more feral fowl than it does humans. Cocks and hens are EVERYWHERE and they are protected. I'll see if I can dig up a few shots of those as well.

    Rooster anyone?

Here's one of the wild roosters that roam Kauai.. I think I saw some of the most beautiful fowl on that island...

This one was in a parking area near where I saw the goats.

    The Elusive Nene bird..

Ok, who am I kidding? The Nene is pretty common there as well.

All you birders out there, help me out.. Are these not geese?

    Re: Waimea Canyon Locals

In addition to feral goats and fowl, I remember seeing an awful lot of cats too.

The native species don't have much of a chance with all the effects of human intrusion

    Nice images, btw.

Yes that's the state bird. It's a variety of the hawaiian goose.

    Re: Waimea Canyon Locals

reminds me, when i was in hawaii i went on one of the birding tours my cousin gave (hawaii forest and trail) and saw all kinds of cool birds, but i couldn't get a good shot of any since in only had a 200mm. but i saw a bunch through my binoculars and camera. :-) plus randomly a native hawk, and owl. it was a good time even though i'm not a birder.
