    Unusual Bluebird Behavior

As I pulled up behind a co-workers truck yesterday, I saw this bluebird fly to her mirror. The bird made multiple attempts to fly into the truck. Since the drivers window was up, the bird couldn't get in. I took these shots with the Coolpix 5700 through my windshield, hence the less than stellar quality. But I still thought they were neat shots.

These are cropped, but otherwise untouched.

O.K. Paul, is it a male or female bluebird?

I think she must be protecting her territory from that bird she sees in the mirror and maybe a reflection in the window as well.

Chunk, I didn't realize you were a bird man! You are a man of many talents.

I went back to the same lot today (elaborate pre-treatment system going in) and she was back again. Only today, she picked the passenger side window, and she brought friends.

BTW, it stinks shooting through a windshield, no matter how clean it is...

I'm not really a birdman Speed. I do enjoy watching them though. Is someone feeding birds around there? Seems like you have found some unusual behavior. Maybe you could use your car as a blind and get some really close up shots. These you've shown are interesting as they are.

There is a house on the other side of the street from where these were taken. But I didn't see any feeders out. Maybe it's just a popular place for bluebirds.

    Thanks for the comments Chunk!

That field in the BG is perfect bluebird habitat so to speak ;)

The images first posted do appear to be territorial aggression.

Though it appears the first batch is a female bird, usually it's the males that defend the territory . Possibly that bird is a young male, but I don't know for sure?

That occurred to me when I replied to Chunk's message. I'll get some shots of the field for you. I'm going back out there next Tuesday. Maybe I'll get some more bluebird shots as well.

There weren't that many of them Ray! And besides, bluebirds are beautiful. Crows and their relatives (blackbirds, grackles, etc) are just plain ugly birds - to me. Paul may think differently...

    You tell me.

Taken panning to the right. You can stitch them together if you are so inclined. But these should let you know what the surrounding area was like.

Sure, that's a hay field like environment and those conifers provide plenty of cover and food ;)
