    Turkey Vulture from today

Got home from ice skating and six of these guys were circling so I ran inside and got the "extreme" lens. Canon 7D @ 672mm f/7.1
A common bird, but it's my first occurance with one so I think it's pretty neat. Thanks! :]

    Nice shots.

    "Canon 7D @ 672mm f/7.1" It's the 300mm with a 1.4x= 420mm, correct?

Technically it is 420mm, but with the 1.6 crop it is actually 672mm. To all of the "full-frame" guys out. The lens is 420mm, but 420mm does almost nothing by itself. But yeah haha.

I see all the guys in wildlife magazines using 5D's with the full-frame and a 500mm or 600mm lens, and It still makes me wonder why? They are so far away, I don't know why they use a crop camera. But thats just me.

Because if they crop out the center they have exactly the same shot you have. Cropping or using a smaller sensor does NOT increase the focal length. It is NOT actually 672mm. - TF

    Re: Turkey Vulture from today

That is true, but cropping for bird photography is horrible to do. I do it, this shot it, a little bit, but I don't even think these shots are that sharp. They would have to crop twice to get the shots presented and that would drastically kill the shot and resizing it. Even with the 18 megs, when I rezise at 300 dpi, I resize it at 5184. The smaller sensor gives a shallower angle of a few degrees which in my case makes the focal range alot longer.

@CaraRose: thanks! Yeah, they are so commonplace, but it's eerie as they hover above you. These shots were taken when I was handholding that 11 pounds of crazy equipment and they flew exactly straight above my head. It was hard to hold the camera at a 90 degree angle. But yeah, they have an ugly sense to them, butt still graceful in flight! :] !

Not sure if I understand the statement. Perhaps they were close enough that a full-frame with a 500mm/600mm was sufficient. Besides, full-frame sensors perform better in low light all else being equal.

If the 5DmkII had a 6+ fps, I would buy and use it exclusively for everything.
