Tube Time??

I was out playing with the tubes on the 105mm yesterday afternoon. First time in a very long time that I've had the tubes on. Took a little getting use to and I don't work off a tripod very well. Seems I've been doing to much sports photography lately and not enough of the old nature stuff. At any rate here are a few from my outing.

I used one tube on these the 36mm in conjunction with the Nikkor 105mm. I am getting a lot of post in the gallery. Since taking over as the Mod there I have tried to encourage and welcome those that are posting mostly on the gallery. I try to steer them toward a forum that may fit their style of photography. Don't forget to check the gallery for comments every few days if you are letting your image post to your gallery also. Many of the gallery regulars never leave there and they appreciate it when you respond to their comments on the gallery.

Here are a few taken this afternoon on the same flowers but with a little different technique. The first three are with the 105mm again but with a 20mm tube and the camera was on the monopod and I added a little light from the on board flash. The last one no tubes and natural light only.

Might be an Old Timer, but you got young eyes to see all that stuff, my man. What is that green thing -- a cicada? Love the flies. I'm not a tube fan, but might be time to give it a go again...

Thanks LL for you observations. I bounce around using tubes and not using them. Most of the time unless I just go out with the intent of getting as close as I can I prefer to shoot with just the 105mm macro. They are fun to play with though and can get some incredible results.

My first lens purchase after getting the DSLR other that the kit lens was the 105mm macro. I have never regretted it. It is a very nice lens. Now if I could just find the money to upgrade to the VR version.

Thanks you Alison. I enjoy this as much as window light photography. Which reminds me I have to get something new shot for the project this month. I think this will be a great month for pictures.

Awesome work OT...I'm going to have to research what these "tubes" are and get me some. Told the wife this morning what I wanted for fathers day. I told her, save her money for FD and my BD (at the end of this month) and buy me a good macro lens for Christmas. haha I'll have to save my own money and get me some "tubes".

Extension tubes are a great way to do macro photography Ken. Loupey has a great thread on how they work and when to use them. Be sure and read it. It's a relative inexpensive way to get into the macro world. I use mine with my 105mm macro lens but you don't have to have a special lens to use them. I used mine for years on my manual cameras without any thing other than my regular compliment of primes and short tels.

I agree payn that little green dude is very interesting. I don't have the slightest idea what is it is, just know it was really small and was willing to stay in one place while I got set up. You have been leading the way with great macros, just glad I was able to contribute. Thanks for the kind comments.
