Re: A trip to the San Antonio Zoo

Boy do I feel stupid! I haven't worried about genetics in 9 years, so I should have checked my figures before putting my foot in my mouth

Correct me if I am wrong , but a NL X LL produces 50%LL, 50% NL(carring the recessive gene)

You take the N and L and match them up to the L and L giving you 4 matches of NL,NL,LL,LL

It's starting to come back to me..... shall we play with Leucistic recessive for green eyes crossed with green eyed recessive for leucism ....hahahaha

BTW... SW, what do you do for a living that you know genetics so well. Most people don't have a clue, and you obviously know what your talking about quite well.

So.......Let me get this straight........If you cross an alligator that is normal with a recessive leucistis gene with a leucistic gator you would, in a perfect world, produce half leucistic offspring and half normal with the recessive leucistic gene. so the only way to guarantee all leucistic offspring would be to cross two leucistic gators and correct me if I'm wrong but isn't this not even a guarantee....................(My head's starting to hurt)

You are right..... this is a remedial genetics 101 thread .

Assuming that the white alligator with blue eyes is indeed a geneticly leucistic alligator a LLxLL cross will indeed give you 100% LL offspring .

    EVERYTHING you said is correct

Riverbanks Zoo in SC has a Leucistic gator, but they do not display it. Its a small one, and its has a color "toupee"

The havs a couple of crocs, but they are not in a good display for photography.

Please not, once you have multiple genes involved it gets very complicated.
