Too foggy to shoot...So do it anyway!

Very surreal morning. The fog just rolled through until burning off around 10 a.m.. As I was preparing to head out on the trail at sunup, a couple other local photographers I see from time to time had already decided to bag it for the day, and told me I was nuts. Again, I had the trails all to myself. I loved it. Was the shooting hard? Yep. Would I do it again? Absolutely. I doubt any of these will wind up in National Geographic, but I can say that I had a blast shooting in the heavy fog! Anyway, enjoy. Feel free to critique. I know they're a bit "foggy", but you take what nature gives you....

Those Pileated WP's are outstanding. Foggy my butt. Just goes to show ya... perseverence pays off. The fog may have even given you the advantage as they didn't see you coming =)

    Hey all,

I re-worked the first Pileated to see if I could remove that bluish haze the fog caused (and I'm sure the flash contributed as well. I think this is quite a bit better:

Wonderful shots, the rework on that shot really worked.

I keep admiring your wildlife shots...ok...envying them actually. Ever considered giving lessons? A photography trip to Florida sure sounds good when it's -20 and snowing.....

    Thanks for the comments all!

scott-devon - I'm always happy to teach anyone. I love photography. Interestingly though, most of my technique is by instinct. I've been a photographer for a long time (not a nature photographer, though....I've only been shooting nature for a couple years). I know how to read light, which in my mind is the most important aspect of photography. The rest is understanding the basics (DOF, composition, etc.). I can't tell you how many times I've just walked past a shot of an animal or bird that I knew would not make a good shot because of lighting or composition. The rest is really just a matter of dedication (getting up while it's still dark to go shoot in the best light), Knowing where the birds/animals are, Knowing what the direction of the light will be, dumb luck, and then just shooting like crazy to optimize your chances of getting just the right pose.

If anyone wants to come down to SouthWest Florida, I'd be more than happy to take you out shooting with me. I shoot every weekend (yes, I have a day job!), but travel all over South/central Florida shooting on the weekends. Just PM me if you're heading down this way, and I'll gladly coordinate some photography time with you!
