    Today's Catch...

Today in the backyard - two Gray Squirrels and a House Finch. Hard to do backgrounds when everything is bright white. - TF

Nice shots, but the coloring on the second squirrel is so strange.

Squirrel #1 and House finch are perfect!   ...Try entering them in nature photography contests, if these were my shots – I'd even print and hang them up on my wall.:yesnod:

Looks like you've followed advice from another PR member to have the squirrel "look down" into the frame. Love the sharpness on the eye.

About the 2nd squirrel – I agree with what mn shutterbug said – it is covered in not-so-attractive fuzz.

    Thanks for viewing and commenting.

The fuzz on the second squirrel is snow. You can see the litle white traces of the falling flakes.

Actually, it wasn't the snow I was referring too. It almost looks like he's a cross between a regular fox squirrel and a black fox squirrel. I've never seen one with those colors before.

    A.M.D.A. referred to the fuzz.

I think that they are all gray squirrels - black and gray phase. There colors vary somewhat and some of both have reddish highlights. One is very 'half gray/half black' phase. As far as I know, there are no fox squirrels around here as none appear to be big enough. If there were fox around, I think I would see a big one at least occasionally. - TF

That's interesting. The gray squirrels in my yard are basically the same size as the fox squirrels. Also, I should have realized black squirrels are actually a different phase of the gray, not the fox.

I'm originally from west-central MI (now north of Chicago) and the fox I am used to is very fox-red and can be 1 1/2 times the size of the gray. Maybe I just don't know when I see one here. - TF
