Took my camera to work to do some macro stuff with my 50mm 1.8. About the only thing I found that I could shoot on this windy day was a bunch of ants. these are some odd little guys. I don't think I have ever seen this species before. i have sent off an email to an etymologist, so I will update. Tell you this much, makes me wish I had that 100mm Macro.

Wow, interesting looking ants... I couldn't find any in my field guide that even look close. I'm looking forward to finding out what kind they are.

I have nailed down the species...

Elongate Twig Ant, Pseudomyrmex gracilis

They are of Mexican origin, and this is the extreme northern part of their range in Florida.

I got zapped by one of these guys today, while leaning against a tree to get a shot.I had read that they have painful stings, but nothing I read prepared me for what I got.

If I hadn't of known what got me I would have sworn a hornet got me on a fly by stinging.

LOL - Don't feel bad John, I got nailed by a bunch of fire ants last weekend too! Was standing on their mound and didn't even know it. Luckily for me, they were fairly nice about it....only about 20 stings.

I lived in houston and have been blistered by fire ants way to much as a child...... omg, those things suck!!!!
