Summer Bird ID Thread

HMMMMM, Power line cut past watergate huh... If you are coming from werthington and pass the poxono boat launch you eventually get to a powerline cut on and angle that usually has prairie, hummingbirds and bluewinged warblers. That cut is before watergate though. About a 1/4 mile past the enterance to watergate is a small pulloff with a gate. If you park there, you should find a few least flycatchers, bluewinged/goldenwinged, great crested fly, chipping sparrows and maybe a blackburnian in the spruces. I haven't been up there in over a month though.

I was coming in from the other side. I've been parking at Millbrook and walking the dirt road down to Watergate ,that pulloff with the gate leads down to the same dirt road I walk. I saw a Prairie and a Hummingnird along the powerline. The Parula was in the spruces down near the water at the end of that road that goes down from the gate. I also saw a couple yellow-throated vireos in the spruces.

The least flycatchers are in the swampy area on the other side of the brook(che-beck che-beck) and the bluewinged/goldenwinged(hybrids mostlikely) are in the nasty tangled area the powerline goes over and on the field on the other side of the tree line it leads to. They may not be calling, because they should be nesting by now.

Now seriously, in late may werthington has no less than 10 males on territory in the camp grounds behind the park building(pull in and go LEFT and park in the lot) walk into the camp grounds and 200 feet in you should find a cuckoo ;) they are always there for some reason year after year. ok, keep going and the road will bend left and go slightly uphill. start looking for a hooded! if you get to the big bathroom facility find the pheobe nest that's always on the building ;)

I have a Turkey Vulture doing the same dance on top of a Hydro pole lol . And i tought he was getting ready for lift off and started snaping photos , Boy was i suprised lol

Oh you are my hero! guy is right, because that's a male Do yourself a favor and follow him back to his burrow in the bank and set up somewhat close. They are very shy though, so stay well hidden.

Dont think ill be going back to that area for another 2 weeks , and im almost positive i wont be going to look for his burrow . C theres about 1KM of swamp and snakes to cross to make it to were there might be a Burrow , and i dont like snakes hehe .

Hey Paul what are this birds chances ? I was looking to see if I could find the nest to replace it in but didn't see one. The mother bird kept coming back to feed it but it wasn't moving at all from that spot. I did see it stretch out its wings a few times but never try to flap them, doesn't have much of a tail yet either. I think its biggest problem is that it was only about a foot off the ground.

Have you ever seen a bluegrey gnatcatcher nest? They are made of moss and lykens(sp?) and are impossible to find at this time of year. The nest blends in perfectly even before the tree leafs out. That baby looks pretty big , so I would say 50/50 at that hight off the ground. Birds don't need a tail to fly BTW... I have seen many a tailless bird cruising through the sky :lol:

House sparrows, do you by any chance have tree sparrows in your area? They don't have grey on the top of their heads(males)

GREAT CAPTURE

I took this shot last may, it wasn't until I was looking at the picture on the computer that I figured out it was at a nest. Last year I ran into many Indigo Buntings flying around with no tail. I would think a little guy like this might need one more than an adult.
