This bird was flying over the lagoons at the Botanic Gardens. Completely new one for me. A tern?

Left turn. opps, I mean Caspian Tern :D

Cormorant? I'm used to them being black, and this was brown, so I'm not sure.

Double crested cormorant non breeding plumage.

I've been calling this a female ruby-throated hb, but I'm coming more to the conclusion that it is a male and that I'm just not catching the light right to see all of the throat color. Correct? Also, any ideas on how to capture the red? TIA, Terry

definately a male due to the thoat. The red comes from a reflexion of light, so natural lighting angle or flash angle is key to bringing out the red gorget.

Beautiful shot of Hummingbird on butterfly bush. Really great one. Its not easy task to do this. Its need a lots of patient of this.

ok i hope im right lol i think the first one is a common yellow throat female?? looks similar to the females i have seen around my area, and i believe the second is a song sparrow

( crossing fingers that im right) lol

fall plumage of the yellow rumped warbler. Warblers are very drab in the fall/winter.

I don't think its a song, it didn't have the "dot" on the chest. But it also didn't look like the others I've seen around (swamp, savannah)...

Someone told me the warbler's were Tennessee, but I didn't think the Tennessee had wing bars, so I'm going with your ID :)

Sorry, missed the 3rd warbler image and thought palm(but typed YR... long day). Still looks more palm warbler over tennessee due to the boldish wing bars.

I'm a bit rusty on fall warblers :mad2:


most streak breasted sparrows have a "dot" and the few that don't CAN'T be this bird :) Song is the educated guess.

Agreed, but the first appears to have black legs .. :confused:

These were taken along the Montana/Wyoming border, just east of Yellowstone NP. I think they are juveniles, but not sure what species. RTH was my guess when I started shooting them, but looking at the images has made me doubt that.

Thanks Paul. Is there a particular feature characteristic of the juvenile RTH that is a dead giveaway?

They vary throughout the range, but it's in the buteo family and has that body style. All the field marks(head, wings color, chest and tail) are how I ID'd it....... I was a official hawk watch counter for 3 years and know my north american hawks quite well.

spotted, redstart and the last is very tough. I can't be positive, but I think it's a conneticut warbler. Never seen one though.

I wouldn't have put this shot in here... I think it's likely too blurry and indistinct to ID... BUT-- an osprey was spotted just due south at the Skokie Lagoons (part of the same lagoon system as the Botanic Gardens where I took this) a few days after this, and the body shape and color (that can be made out here) looks osprey-like to me, and doesn't really look like a hawk or other raptor I'm used to. I'm wondering if I may have seen it without knowing it.

100% sure it's an osprey. Watch for migrating raptors! I have seen atleast 8 ospreys alone go over my work between 4:30 and 5pm this week.

young chipping sparrow :D

These are some pretty major crops of a couple birds that I don't normally see around here. They are both Robin-sized birds. The grey bird has some similarity to a dark-eyed junco, but I think he is too big.

Quite a few of these guys mixed in with some Chickadees and Palm Warblers at the Botanic Gardens.
