    Spring 2013 Bird ID thread

    Time for a new ID thread? I mean, if we're going to include the season in the thread title, then Fall 2012 is long gone!

    Anyway, my current mystery. In size and build this is just like a Green Heron, but the coloring isn't even remotely like that. This thing jumped out of some reeds in front of me and I barely got the camera raised and tripped off three shots. This is the only one close to usable, as the others focused on the water.

    pretty sure i got it.


    male Least bittern probably a juvi almost adult specimen

    and from what i'm reading consider yourself forunate for even getting a look let alone a pic of him.

    I think you're right, thanks. Bittern is not something I thought of, so I've learned something then. And yes, I see the word "elusive in many descriptions!

    It shot out of a stand of cattails, and I see that the use such plants as nests, or nest material. Maybe I'll be lucky enough to see him again...
